What seemed like the contents of my sons pockets stuck in the waste trap, turned out to be fine skimmed of strands of white plastic, added to that, when it was at top spin speed there was a loud rhymical knocking and an alarming amount of smoke coming out of the machine. At slower spin speeds just the knocking (no smoke) When I turn the drum by hand it seems ok.
    Belt, brushes are fine

Am I right in thinking bearings?
If so what would I be expected to pay for it’s repair. Unfortunately there are no whitegoods engineers in my area.

    Thanks

    No!

It is some foreign object (coin or something?) caught between the front outer drum and the inner stainless drum. The whole drum will need to come out, be dismantled to remove the offending article. 😕

WEll I removed the drum, opened it up and found that the drum had been wearing against the front outer drum, so unfortunately not a foreign object, so is it bearings, I say this because when I turn the drum it rotates quite freely, without any noise.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sounds like the front bearing has completely broken up leaving the shaft to spin freely on the back bearing only. Try forceing some up and down movement on the front edge of the drum there should be no movement at all.
