Hi, I promise I searched before asking this, I hope you don’t mind my first post being a question. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a CTD00 that I paid ~£150 for (the Large Chain delivered the wrong one, where it sat unnoticed for weeks while we renovated the house!). Anyway, it now has the following problem: The belt has slipped off the plastic pulley thing (you know what I mean) that encircles the motor shaft, due to the pulley cracking and deforming. The belt now lies on the shaft itself. It still spins, but badly, and makes a racket! My options are therefore:

    1) Try to repair it – Seems like a nasty job to replace the pulley as the motor shaft is captive and seems to require a general disassembly. Also could I get the belt back on the drum without a special tool?

    2) Get it fixed by a pro. Do you think it would make financial sense to do so, or should I…

    3) Get a new one. In which case which do you think would be the best option under £200? Not bothered whether vented or not, but I would quite like one that was easier to repair than this one seems to be! 😡

    Many thanks!

edit: CTD not CDT, no wonder the search came up blank…..

Pretty sure that there is no plastic pulley on the motor shaft, the belt should run in grooves on the metal shaft of the motor with 2 plastic, spring tensioned pullies either side of the belt tensioning it.

How old is this machine, was it bought as new? if so is it not still under warranty?

If the plastic pulley is the only obvious damage then a repair should be viable. If the machine is not new then a date code ( first two numbers of serial number) would be a big help. There have been some modifications to the drum support front bearings that are a ‘must do ‘ if you intend to keep this appliance.

There are special tools to assist in refitting the belt on this machine.

This model has a single plastic pulley mounted directly on the motor casting Mark. A real pain to change the belt on these.

Re: Hotpoint CTD00 – repair or replace?

Hi guys, thanks for the replies, good service! Some answers from me:

    – I have had it about 1.5-2 years, serial begins with 40.
    – Pulley is the only damage, electrics etc all fine.

As iadom said, it looks like a horrendous job that I would probably get an engineer to do after reading your replies, but not if it is liable to cost as much as a replacement, and need further mods. What is the issue with the bearings?

I don’t like scrapping stuff willy nilly, but it looks like a badly designed bit of kit IMO…I want one I can tinker with!

    Cheers

Having just checked the info I have, it is not date code specific 😳

The only way to tell is to look closely at the front of the drum with a side panel removed, after you have unplugged it of course. 😉

Looking from the front of the machine, if you have the pulley type drum support bearings you will be able to see two small wheels supporting the drum at about 20 past & 20 to the hour. If you have these wheels then they will almost certainly fail with regular use. They will first become very noisy, then the drum will slip off them and more than likely cause belt failure. However the modified part is not that expensive, just under £20 ex vat, jockey pulley is around £7.00 ex vat, so on balance, well worth repairing.

Ah yes it does have these cr*ppy little wheels, will factor that into my thinking, thanks for taking the time to look into it for me, much appreciated!
