We have an Indesit WIDL 126 washer-dryer, about 20 months old and out of warranty. A couple of months ago it started making a slightly odd “twittering”/squeaky noise (not very loud) on slowing down from spinning. More recently it has got a bit louder, and the noise has also been happening as it speeds up to spin. The last few cycles it seemed to continue even when the machine had got to full spin speed, so that the normal high-pitched noise of the spin sounded a bit like it was wavering slightly.

Other than this the machine is working normally. During the wash cycle the turning of the drum sounds completely normal, as it does when turning it by hand after the wash to remove clothes. Washing performance seems normal. (We haven’t been using the drying function over the summer, so don’t know if this is normal or not.)

Does anyone know what the noise could be, please, and if we need to call out an engineer now to listen to it, or if we can safely leave it as long as everything else seems to be working OK? Might the noise be an indication that something is about to go wrong?

    Thanks for any help.

Re: Indesit WIDL 126 – funny noise

SQUEAKS on a washer can be caused by many many things it can be a carbon build up where the belt runs on the pulley, it can be a bearing issue, it can be a foreign object in the drum or even (I HAVE SEEN THIS IN THE HTP WD 60 SERIES) a problem with the bearing water seal.
does it always make the noise?
is it always when the machine is turning?
does it sound linked to movement of the drum?
and does it do it if you turn the drum by hand?
let me know and if i can i will help you to diagnose your fault

Thanks for the reply. Some of this is in my original post, but to clarify:
Yes, I think it makes the noise at some stage in every cycle, but only when the machine is turning, and only in the spin phases as described above. (Originally it only occurred when it was slowing down from spinning, including from the “warm-up” spins.)
Yes, it does seem to be linked to the movement of the drum (but only in the spin phases, not otherwise), and no, I can’t reproduce it by turning the drum by hand.
We did wonder if it might have been worse with a large and/or slightly unbalanced load, but we recently ran it empty to clear limescale etc, and the noise was just the same.
