I’ve got a call on Tuesday to a Westinghouse Refrigerator that the lady (and I mean Lady of the Manor) claims her mother bought it around mid to later forties specially imported form USA !!!! She says she can’t turn it down or up, it’s just permanently on. I asked for model/serial number details. She range me back and said “I got the butler, gardener and handyman to move the beast ….” Serial number 6277712 no model number but she said the serial number plate had “Part Y-8156” on it.

Anyway she is determined that I look at this even though it’s almost certainly obsolete. But the cheek of it she wanted me to come and do a “free examination” of it even though she lives about 20 miles away. “Why should I pay if you can’t fix it”… typical the only reason she’s rich is because she’s so tight. She eventually agreed a fee.

Anyone seen or heard of such a model – about 5Ftx3Ftx2Ft Free standing by the sounds of it??? 😯 😯

Around 6 or 7 years ago went to view a house, while looking to move….as you do. Noticed while being shown around the cellar a strange boiler looking thing, having just been directed to teh central heating boiler I enquired what this item was. the lady said it was the “gubbins of the fridge”, she clearly noted my quizzical look. True enough this beast was a gas powered fridge, the thing was operated by NG and this lot in the cellar was directly below the fridge in the kitchen. Looking under it you could see the two pipes coming out of the base of the fridge and going down through the floor into the callar. Apparently her husband had swiped it from an American airbase during the war ! It was HUGE it was more like a home mortuary than a domestic fridge and she had a fairly new kitchen installed around it.

Went to this one today. The fridge was purchased in 1949 from Harrods as a wedding present. Works fine other than the thermostat/selector is stuck on. It was gassed with 1.0lb of F12 (??)and hummed away ever so quietly. The Lady is insistant on getting it fixed even though the spring arm is broken and all the liner in the door has all holed.

So if anyone knows where to get spares for a circa 1949 Westinghouse Y-8156 let me know !!! :rolling:

I did tell her she did not have a chance but insisted I try. She also asked if I was unable to get spares ( :rolling: ) what should she do. I suggested a museum but she was not impressed.
