ModeratorI have just had my daughter on the phone, she lives in a Mcr city centre flat. A couple of days ago she came home to the flat and found the power to the sockets was off although the lights worked. I told her to look for the consumer unit/fuse box and she found one switch that had tripped. She reset it and it has not gone off again since. However she has just rung to say that for past few days there is a strange loud clicking noise coming from the box. It is intermittant and can go for a day without making the noise. I could hear it over the phone, a loud ratcheting sound like someone running something quickly along a radiator. I have advised her to get it seen to ASAP but she is concerned that it will not make the noise ‘to order’ Any suggestions as to the cause of this.?

Had something similar recently with a rental property, where the oven constantly tripped out. Eventually was on site when the box started making some very strange noises. Cut the power and took the cover off the consumer box (I’m not trained for this……) cooker breaker was sat on a horn on the “common rail”, the feed wire came out of the top. It fell out when I touched it. Neither the breaker or the feed were actually secured by the retaining screws……..

Daughters, don’t you just love em. 27 years old, private education, GSCE’s, A levels, two Degrees, qualified solicitor on almost three times what I earn and yet I still seem to be carrying her around all the time 🙂
To be honest she does work ridiculously long hours, is the singer with an ‘in house’ rock band and choir, plays team squash, netball etc so I can understand when she says says doesn’t have time to get things sorted. She seems to think that the noise is worse when the immersion heater knocks on.
I can sense a ‘ Daaaaaaaad, can you come down and have a look,( not my area of expertise) or wait in for whoever’ call coming soon. Problem is my phone has been burning off the wall in the past fortnight so I am three days behind with my calls. In fact I may ask for assistance from the clan gathering in Manchester next wekend. 😆

Hi Jim
We used to a have a system in this area that was called “Electretec” where every circuit in the house was controlled by a relay from a central control unit; the relays were all in a box next to the consumer unit. Has your daughter got a similar system? if so then the immersion heater relay sounds to be at fault, may have a loose or burnt contact. If I remember correctly the relays were low voltage control BUT obviously mains voltage to the contacts
Mal 😉

She had a bloke round yesterday after the washer was found to be causing the trip to go.
The noise is of course something quite different. You will have to remember that this description is from a ‘girl’ 😆
Apparently there are two water heating systems, an off peak one and a booster system 😕
The switch/thingymejig, AC doofer ( her description ) in the box was firing on and off rapidly causing the very loud noise. He has temporarily disconnected this until he obtains a part and switched the booster on permanently so that she has hot water until he returns.
It didn’t make much sense to me but there you have it.
He doesn’t do washing machines but there is no way I am going all the way down town to have a look at a poxy integrated Ariston washer dryer that already has a slight split in the inner drum. The landlord is dealing with it, in the meantime large bags of washing appeared here at the weekend.
