ParticipantMy hotpoint is about 3/4 years old. It is making a loud noise when it starts to spin. I have opened the top and checked the springs and belt which seem to be ok. It spins slowly but when it starts to go faster it makes a short grating noise and goes slow again. This happens about 3 times then it stops completely. Someone suggested it may be the bearings, just wondered if anyone had any ideas before i start looking for a new washer. Thanks.

If you turn the drum by hand and it is noisy or if you pop the lower back panel off after removing the plug and you can see rusty marks on the chassis then your bearings have failed. Can be a very expensive repair, sometimes requiring drum support and rear drum half.
Remember that your machine is covered by the manufacturers five year parts warranty, you will only pay the £90 labour charge regardless of the parts required. You will not be able to buy a new machine for that price.
If you post the serial number from the door hinge here we would be able to have a decent guess as to the actual age of your machine.

Thanks for your time. The serial number is 89119087. When i spin the drum by hand it moves easily and there are no unusual noises. I haven’t taken the back plate off yet but will check that tomorrow.

If it sounds normal then the chances are your bearings are OK. Brush change not as easy on these as on earlier Hotpoint machines though, also has two or three different motors.
The reason I asked for your serial number was that most people under estimate the age of their machine. Yours came through the factory gates in May 2001. 😉 Unless it laid around in a dealers or you can find your receipt then I would forget about a five year parts warranty. Brushes on these machines do last a little longer than on earlier models and five years is about right for average use.
NB. Do not keep trying it, you may end up damaging the control module if you do.

Have sent washing round to neighbours so i won’t run it again! I’ve opened the back flap but everything looked ok. I’ll perhaps try changing the brushes then, is this something i could do myself? I will have a go at most diy.

If the motor turns when you set it to spin only, then I wouldn’t waste your time and effort changing the brushes if I were you. The fault lies elsewhere? 😉

Hi
If you should decide to investigate the wear on the brushes or any other work on the appliance then please unplug first :plug:Greg
