Whirlpool says it’s cutting about 5,000 jobs this year and next due in large part to the long downturn in the U.S. housing market.

A company spokeswoman says the layoffs will likely include the Tulsa plant where about 1,300 employees make kitchen range cookers.

Whirlpool have not revealed the number of layoffs at specific plants.

The job cuts include positions being cut from plant closings already announced this year.

Since January Whirlpool has announced the closings of plants in Tennessee, Mississippi and two in Mexico

The company said it also will shut down its facility in Jackson, Tennessee, and shift production from there to its plant in Findlay, Ohio.

It is not known at this time if Whirlpool jobs in Europe will be affected in these cutbacks.
