KeymasterIn the public washer forum is a post about no spares for a 6 month old washer!!!
The whole post is 8 hours long during yesterday, at 7pm last night the guy resolved the issue.
Is this really a modern customer? Within 8 hours of posting he’s bought a new appliance all because of a door seal. In doing so buying a worse box than he already had. It also begs the question as to why a door gasket is £50.00 ish?
I wonder how much it will cost him to give away his old(newish) one?

I think you’ll find he has “had it for 6 months” rather than it only 6 months old. 😉

Fair point Martin, however in his last post he is offering his 7kg Samsung to any takers. This is not a brand that I am familiar with but how long have they been selling a 7kg machine? Also the thread heading does say, ‘ six month old washing machine’.

Fortunately I don`t think this is a truly modern customer and the almost insignificant number of people doing this is not going to cause any financial hardship or affect our individual businesses in any way :).

I suspect this client, like many I visit, has become aware of manufacturers component pricing. Clients aren’t as ignorant of these factors now, primarily due to “surfing” and I believe or at least hope manufacturers will ultimately have to be more realistic with component prices. Surely when manufacturers become responsible for disposal of their old appliances this may be something they’ll address. I had to replace a door seal on a fridge freezer last week, client insisted on OPN not universal kit and then haggled price. As an exercise I priced every component part to build this model of fridge freezer, pricing did not include the main carcass, as no price was available, labour or sundry items. My client’s £389 fridge freezer would cost me in parts alone to build over £1900 plus VAT. Crazy world :haier: Here’s one for the Rumour Mill: Merloni are developing an inflatable washing machine, use once and throw away. Apart from inflatable not a lot of development then! 😉

Here’s the thing… (favourite saying from Becker, politically incorrect US TV, brilliant.)
The only that this feeds is our fear that appliance have become a throw-away commodity and, whilst you may well baulk at the notion, some people and I mean especially those with more cash than sense, will simply adopt this as a reasonable course of action. In fact they would consider it perfectly reasonable and that is the scary part that Kevin alludes to in this thread.
Fact is that for >£300 the guy’s bought a new machine. Whether or not it’s a pile of poo is irrelevant. Even though we know it pretty much will be.

I agree 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}, what I have found on some occassions is that clients are pricing parts themselves, not necessarily to do the job themselves but to ensure they’re not being ripped off and all credit to them for being so astute. The price of parts from some manufacturers and manufacturers call out / labour charges are making them of a mind to buy a new machine. We need everyone to be aware that Independent Service Engineers are possibly the best source of advice, UKW being the best. By the way I want some Van Livery, how do I get it? 🙂
