Hi, my Hotpoint WMA32 (about 5yrs old) has become very noisy on the spin cycle. It makes a serious racket, similar to a rocket taking off!

Did some searching on the forum and it seems the problem is likely to be bearings and/or weights.

    My questions are

    1. How do i get into the thing to have a look? I think the top or back comes off but can’t see how! (the wife is concerned i can’t get it in it, let alone repair it 😳 )

    2. Is it going to be worth repairing either of these faults (parts + labour) on a 5yr+ machine?

    Any comments/assistance much appreciated.

Hi Im an engineer for hotpoint. The easy way to see if its bearings that are making the noise is to turn the drum by hand from the inside and if you feel and hear a low rumbling sound its the bearings. If the machine is less than five years old it is still covered by the 5 year parts warranty and for it to be repaired it would cost you £90 and will take about an hour or so to repair.

Post the serial number up and we will be able to date your machine with a reasonable degree of accuracy. We would certainly be able to tell if it was under 5 years old. If it is over 5 then a local independent engineer would be advisable. By the sounds of it your machine will have gone past a simple ( not actually simple on these machines ) bearing repair and will more than likely need a rear drum half and drum support.

Click the link in my sig to see if we have someone who can help. I do this repair for around £120 on average, dependant on parts required.

    Jim.

    Thanks for the response chaps!

It does make a rumble noise if i turn the drum by hand and doesn’t feel very ‘smooth’ either. I don’t know what is was like beforehand to compare though.

However, if the noise made when i manually turn it is multiplied by the speed of a spin, then it would make sense.

    My numbers are:

    Model: WMA32P
    Serial: 86174107

I’ve given up even trying to take it apart (alhough i think the front has to come off) so will definately be a call-out from someone. Most grateful if you can ‘date’ it for me.

Hi the date code is the first 2 numbers of the serial number in this case 86, which means the machine was made in feb 2001. Id much prefer to change the rear half of the drum and drum support than change the bearings.

    Thanks for the reply.

Booked a service call through the site. Went through the page at 9pm last night and someone called me at 9am this morning, coming over tomorrow (tues) morning. Impressed so far!

It was the bearings after all. Absolutely no way i could have done this myself so thanks for all your help and top marks to the forum for putting me in touch with a local repairer. Job done 48hrs after first post 😀
