My machine has a noisy thumping when on a ‘High Spin’ only i.e. No 1,2,3 or 4 It is not overloaded, is level and works perfectly on lower spin i.e. No 5,6 or 7. The belt is not slipping.
The brushes in the motor are approximately half inch long and I wondered if these should be changed?
Everything seems tight within the machine and there is no lift in the drum bearings.

Although the brushes are near to the end of useful life, they would not cause the noise you describe. One possiblity is that the drum support spigot/shaft has fractured. Has the machine been used mainly on low temperature washes, possibly with liquid detergents?

Yes – we have constantly used low 40 degree temps and liquid soap in its 3 year life.
Almost always on Number 4 cycle.
Would this fault be a major repair and high parts costs as it is still in its 5 year parts warranty?
Would I se it without removals?

This is a major repair, impossible to examine without complete removal of inner drum. If you are under a five parts warranty, now is the time to use it. Doubtless the engineer will advise you on correct useage, however it is better to use a good quality powder or tablet such as Ariel. try to do at least one 60° wash every week. Every couple of months do a maintenance wash, that is a small amount of detergent, no clothes and set machine to 95° wash.

Many thanks Jim, I shall take your advice and call the firm out. I was doubtfull at first because they charge £89 plus for the call out and I am only on disability money with no work.
    Thank you once again.

iadom (Jim) – Just for your record, I called out the Hoover engineer and gave him the symptoms. Within minutes, he detected the fault to be a loose front drum balance weight. After tightening up these three self tapping screws the machine now runs like new!
The only bad news was that this call-out cost me £89.23p.

Thanks for letting us know the outcome, it all helps us and others to share your experiences. The advice on detergent use and temperatures is still sound.

If the noise returns, get it sorted ASAP as it is not unknown for the mounting lugs to rip off the outer drum.

    Jim.
