ParticipantHi,
Indesit WDG1295WG
Before I place an order for a new (not cheap!) motor I just wanted to run this past you clever people for confirmation of the fault really.
Washing machine was fine, then one day just stopped turning the drum at any point – other that that is seems fine and goes throught the cycles etc etc
On inspection I found the motor brushes had been worn away so replaced these on adivse from others. Still no change. On checking the terminal points at the brushes on the motor when running there is 240v at both of them. One thing I have learnt is that even worn brushes would show signs of life even if it was just arcing etc.
So if I have 240v at the motor terminals and its still not turning or showing any signs of life then it must be the motor that is faulty? true?
Many thanks
Jez

It is not advisable or sensible to ‘live’ test your machine. The condition of the motor continuity and resistance can be checked with a simple multimeter, with the mains isolated. Faults in the electronic module can also prevent the motor from running.
PS. I think you have given the wrong model number, is it a WDG1295WG ?

Yep I have changed the title to the correct model, thanks
I wasnt checking the motor as such (as I was not sure what results to expect) but I was checking that the rest of the system was doing what it should. If there is 240v being supplied to the motor then how can a fault elsewhere prevent it from running?
Any specific advise on testing the motor itself is welcomed.
Thanks
Jez

As iadom mentioned earlier, checking with a multimeter for continuity will suffice in establishing whether the motor is OK. A physical inspection of the moving parts for wear/arcing/worn armature segments etc is advisable also.
The motor is powered by the electronic module and they are usually the first to fail. I wonder if that has been inspected?

For continuity testing I would need to remove the power terminal cables first?

Jez, with respect, in order to carry out effective repairs to major electrical appliances one has to have a good elementary electrical knowledge in order to undertake such work with any degree of safety. Your question therefore gives me the impression that perhaps you may like to consider expert intervention in order to resolve the problem?
One this occasion though I will answer your question and confirm that you will indeed need to disconnect the motor terminal cables first. But please can I ask that any future problems would be best solved by using the link (below) to get a local repairer in to fix it for you. 😉

We have absolutely no way of knowing just what your capabilities are. Electricity is a silent, oudourless killer.
It can and does offend the odd individual when we advise them to seek help, but if we read in the press or saw on TV that someone had burned their house down or killed themselves as a result of advice given on this forum it would not look very professional and would also leave us open to litigation. The first two posts tried to answer your query or at least point you in the right direction.
Your subsequent question quite understandably raised Martin’s concerns, his advice was not only for your benefit but for anyone else reading this thread.
Jim.
