    Hi

I am new to this site and I hope you will be able to help.

I have a washer/dryer 18 months old, and I have recently noticed stains haevn’t come off clothes recently. I have also noticed that when I put a wash at 40 degree no hot water seems to go through. I did a further test to do a wash at 90 degree and the water was definitly hot.

Has the thermosta got a problem? what could I do to make sure?

Cool washes are generally cold fill only, the machine will adjust the temperature with its heater. Have you cleaned out the filter recently? Bear in mind that the wash does not clean your clothes, it’s the rinses which actually carrying the dirt away. Poor drain = poor clean.

Failing that, tell us about your detergents….

    Hi

My husband has cleaned the filter and we still have the problem. I really looks like the 40 degree wash is a cold wash as even pen marks do not go off and they usually do and there is also powder marks on dark T shirt. I use Arial tablets and have done for years so I wouldn’t have though they would be the problem.

    Is it the thersmosta?

It wouldn’t be the thermostat, if it was the machine would pick the fault up and move to the spanner, the thermostats are “NTC” which means they are controlled by the electronics. If you try using a descaler, and doing regular boil washes, this will help.

Also check to see if the water is draining away properly, as above, poor drainage, poor performance. And the plastic cover on the door doesnt get that hot on low temperatures so you probably wouldnt notice on a 40 wash.

these new machines use less water than older models, if you put to much washing in there you will get powder marks, also you could try using the liquitabs, i find there better in newer machines.

    Hi Tequlia,

There’s a load of information on detergent use in this article

Kandl’s on the right track with maintance washes but, using Ariel tabs, you shouldn’t have the need for descaler normally so long as you’re not in an extremely hard water area.

Liquid tabs are not such a good idea, they contain no bleach so you won’t have any disenfecting going on using those. Fine for colour loads though.

It actually sounds to me as if you’re overloading the machine and that’s what stopping it from performing correctly. You must leave a 10cm gap, or handwidth, between the top of the laundry and the drum opening. Pack it any more than that and you will get these issues, especially the residues.

For really heavy stains try pre-treating with a liquid like Ariel liquid, just rub some on if you don’t have a ball thingy, then wash as normal with your tabs and it will do its best but bear in mind that some pen marks can be a nightmare, if even possible, to get out. With two kids that have an affinity for artistic flair I’m painfully aware of this.

I doubt very much that there’s actually a fault with the washer, just sounds like a use problem to me.

    K.
