ParticipantHi everyone
I have a Hygena APL8222 which has worked well for 11 years but recently was full of water at the end of the cycle.
I managed to get all the water out and was very clogged up with gunge (we live in a very hard water area) so cleaned it all out and took out all the inside parts and gave a good clean.
Then I used some dish washer cleaning tablets (twice).
Now what happens is that the cycle starts but keeps getting stuck.
I can get it further if I nudge the circular dial round every so often and it does drain out at the end.But does this mean there is a problem with the Timer/Progamme Selector ? And how easy is it to fix ?
I don’t want to leave it as it keeps getting stuck and is wasting electricity.I scanned the internet for this part and only found one company quoting a cost of £155.
Is it worth replacing the Programme Selector or would it be better to get a new dishwasher?
If I get a new part is it easy to replace myself ?
Also I might get a new Timer and find this isn’t the problem. Can you give any suggestions ?
Thanks.

Does it heat? Timer stops until temperature is achieved at the heat posoitions. Moving it on a click or two allows it to run on to the next heat position.

Yes I don’t think heating is the problem as it feels hot enough.
Although I could give it another go and check. What does it suggest if it is not heating correctly ?
Thanks

There could be a few reasons why it might not be heating, some dishwashers have a “TOC” which is normally a resettable switch. If you have a look under the appliance (with the power off) and see if you can see a thermostat with a little button on it, press the button in, if it clicks, problem solved, if it doesnt – time to look elsewhere. If you have a buzz tester, test the continuity across the heater and see if it buzzes, if it does, great, if not – replace the heater. If your uncertain about doing it yourself, call out an engineer to check for you.

If the machine has an NTC (electronic thermostat) you wont get a bell test reading from it.

I think it could be the heater now as I’ve just run it again and the water is cold, and gets stuck at various points in the cycle.
Can’t see any thermostat on the appliance anywhere and manual doesn’t mention it.Does this sound expensive to get fixed ?

I think it could be the Heater, although I don’t think it was originally – would the Heater have burnt out by being left on too long ?
I can’t see any way of re-setting it – have looked underneath and there’s not a lot there.
How much would a new Heater and Timer cost for this machine or would it be better to buy a new one?
What would an engineer charge for a call out fee ?Thank you

This is a middle aged Brandt-built machine, so not worth going too mad on with the parts. Certainly a timer fault would be far too expensive. These machine were prone to breaking the wiring in the door IIRC, so that is another possibility. Have you tested the heater for resistance (20-30 ohms is typical?. From memory, it can be fitted without the machine having to be removed from the housing, which would save an engineer time. Part no. is 64X3434 if required – an email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk for prices and ordering.
Rates vary widely across the country. An engineer will certainly charge for an hours work, more if the appliance needs to come out of the cabinet. You should discuss this when booking the call. You can contact a UKW engineer in your area by clicking the link below.
Power off, if investigating further.
