Hi, I’m a newbie here and I don’t know the correct procedure so bear with me! My wife defrosted our Hotpoint 8633 Freezer Fridge recently and moved the temperature dial during cleaning the inside. She turned the beast back on and stocked it up, not checking the temperature dial, and left it be. A few days later on returning to the garage she discovered why these devices have a temperature dial. It had leaked more water and food juices everywhere. She discovered the dial and turned it up, which is when it went bang and took out the plug fuse. I changed the fuse and tried again once it was all dried out and the same thing happened again -a big blue flash from the back of the unit and another fuse bites the dust. Entertaining….briefly. Is it likely to be worth repairing and might I be able to replace any busted parts myself? Thanks for any assistance you can give me. HM

    Re: Hotpoint 8633 goes bang!

When you turned the temperature dial, you will have started (briefly 😀 ) the compressor – which is at the bottom, at the back. You might just hit lucky and it’ll be the start device which has failed. The compressor itself is a more likely culprit. Either way, it’s an older machine – certainly not worth a new compressor and re-gas.

Power off, if having a look.

    Re: Hotpoint 8633 goes bang!

    Hi Mr Penguin!

I’ve removed the starter and tested it. It’s a Danfoss 103N0011 and is showing about 87 ohms across the top two contacts and open circuit across the other two directions.

I’ve also tested the compressor which is showing 30-35ohms across the top two, and 15-17ohms in the other two directions.

Does this sound right to you? Also there apears to be some heat damage to the plastic outer of the starter.

Thanks for you help so far. 😀

    Re: Hotpoint 8633 goes bang!

Sorry, had hoped the fridge lads would have picked up on this….. If the start device is looking a bit crispy, you’ve got a problem. The start device is p/no 2502940, about £27 from memory. The good news is most of these are generic, so a compatible part may be available for rather less. An email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will get things moving for you – if you link to this thread, it will help them work out what you really need.

    Dear Mr Penguin,

Thank you so much for your help. 😀

Thanks to you and Dave from the spares department I have managed to fix our faithful old fridge for less than £14.00!!

I will recommend all my friends to your wonderful site.

Erm…..I don’t suppose you or your good buddies can help with my dishwasher?? :rolls:
ADP8132 blew the board, and before I plug the repaired one back in I need to find out whodunnit!?

    Thanks again HM

    Re: Hotpoint 8633 goes bang!

Diplomat ADP8132 is a SMEG-built appliance. Board going bang is usually caused by the soap dispenser solenoid giving out. Better budget for a lot more than £14……….. 🙁

Power off if invesigating, beware of the edges of the door – you can shave with them.

    Re: Hotpoint 8633 goes bang!

    Dear Mr Penguin,

Managed to get dishwasher back together and working with re-conditioned board from QER for £55.00. Not too sad I thought. 🙂

Door opens and closes better now and no leaks…..touch wood!!

I am just waiting for it to blow the board again now………..

From what I read about these machines, I won’t be waiting long! 🙁

Thanks for all yours and the Forum’s help.

    Best wishes, HM
