The article by Tom Utley was regarding 2 British Gas Engineers fitting a boiler in a customers home. The lady of the house was just going to pop out for 30 mins to take the dog for a walk. Could they keep an eye on her young son whilst she was away? “How old is he?” one engineer asked, …. “because if he is under 16 we are not allowed to be left alone with anyone under 16!”
Health and Safety, blame and compensation culture was the point of Tom Utley’s article.

That’s been raised on here before.
Sadly it’s the way of the world these days and it’s all about liability.
I think it was Graham at AIS that told me that, under present regimes, that anyone under the age of 16 is not considered to be “responsible” so if anything goes wrong while you’re there then you are the one responsible, regardless of what it is.
Then add to that, not to put too fine a point on it, what happens if it’s some young girl that appears in nightdress and nothing else then accuses you of something?
In the culture in which we live the consequences of something as seemingly innocent, carried out with all good intent could land you in very hot water indeed. The best bit of it being that you may well have done nothing at all wrong.

I’ll narrow it down for you, last monday a bill went through it’s final phase called ”Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Bill”. It comes into force in 2008 & under the act any worker likely to come into contact with the young- including tennis coaches ,hospital maintenance staff etc, etc, will have to submit to vetting by the Criminal Records Bureau [CRB].
Employers & employees alike who fail to do this will face fines of up to £5000! According to the Education department some 9.5 million people will be affected. Admin fees for these checks vary from £7 to £30, you also need 3 seperate forms of ID & a possible 4 week wait for the results.
Even the poor Scouting Association’s annual CRB bill is now at £250,000 at the moment. So if you’re a repairman or a volunteer for the kid’s christmas panto you’ve got to be vetted, what sad times we are in & who benefits ? The Goverment hmmmmm???
take easy out there guys n’ gals, sleep well! Chris.. 8)October 29, 2006 at 5:53 pm #193571Jackal

The bill is aimed to those individuals whom come into contact with vulnerable groups on a consistent and regular basis.
For most of us this would not be the case and therefore there would not be a need to submit to the checking process. However, if you hold a service contract for say a mental health nursing home or a school kitchen and as part of the make up of your business you attended the property for more than 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of your working time, you would need to submit yourself and your staff to the relevent CRB checks.
With this in mind I wonder if Mr Blair will request the cabinet to undergo the required checks as I think the government would certainly fall into a vunerable group, after all some seem to behave like spoilt little children as part of their job.
😀 😀Regards all

Our village cricket club like all others in the UK, have had to go down the route of CRB checks. Anyone who has regular contact with youngsters whether it be coaching, ground staff, captains or any other person has had a CRB check done. Luckily the English cricket board have funded the checks otherwise I would suspect it would have fallen to the members to have paid it. I can just hear the members now, what you want us to pay for our own check to allow us give our free time for something we enjoy doing on a voluntary basis. yeah right.
