AFAIK any appliance has to be sold with a plug on it these days.

Built in or freestanding? think it makes a difference or maybe some hotperloni engineer will get an easy call.

Perhaps they have fitted a batch of dodgy plugs and had to cut them off. Now before you all start laughing, this did actually happen at Hotpoint almost 30 years ago, just after moulded plugs came on the scene. Hotpoint were one of the first manufacturers to fit moulded plugs to all their appliances. A serious fault was discovered in the plugs which could have caused the plug to short across or set on fire, personally I never saw one that had done this. The upshot was that a national press release was issued and we had to go along and remove the moulded plugs and refit with company issue MK plugs. That in itself was not a problem, however in my area at the time was a major mail order outlet who insisted that we went along and cut the plugs of all the Morphy Richards irons, Hotpoint kettles etc. I spent a full three days, opening boxes and cutting plugs of thousands of small appliances, thank god they didn’t ask us to put plugs on them. The sides and backs of my fingers became red raw as a result of pushing down inside the boxes to draw the damned things out. 👿

I think if you check with the manager of the store in question, those machines are classed as ‘showroom models only, not for re-sale’.

So are these standard, working machines just without a plug?

I bet if they do work and get sold, then a call out would still be needed to replace the 3amp fuse that was fitted by mrs doodahs daughters boyfriends mate who knows about plugs.
