ParticipantHi there,
I have a whirlpool fridge freezer (model no s20brbb20-a/g service code
8586 152 15001)
neither the fridge nor the freezer are cooling at all. Just back from a three day break to find everything defrosted 🙁
I have traced the fault to the compressor not switching on. I have tested the compressor and it is working if i apply power directly to it.
The relay on the PCB is not at fault either as is not getting the signal to switch on the 24V dc to energise the relay. So now i dont know where to look, as i don’t know where the signal is generated from, is it a thermostat or something else and if so where is that physically located so that i can test it?
The digital read out on the front of the display is indicating the the temp is too high by lighting up the red triangle and bleeping( showing – – on the freezer side), so the fridge knows itself that there is something wrong!
any help in fixing this would be very welcome.
if i need to elaborate i can, i also have digital pics of the boards etcps i have placed a call with whirlpool who have said that an engineer is not available for another 6 days 🙁
thanks again

in the fridge at the top, is there 2 temperature controls, on for the freezer and one for the fridge?
If there isn’t it more than likely is a board fault, or a loose wire to the board. The temperature sensors very rarely go wrong.

Hi Again,
the temperature control seem to be digital at the front of the f/f. inside the fridge and the freezer 3/4 of the way up there are ( what i think are sensors); they are about 50mm long 7mm diameter sealed units, with a cable attached, is that the temperature sensors.I have looked at the board and can’t see any obvious fault with it, burnt tracks etc, the fact that no power is going to the relay is an issue.
Would you be able to tell me where the signal is generated from to activate the relay to switch on the compressor pump?
The PBC is coded ITW ISPRACONTROLS

yes, they are the temp sensors. – you wont notice any burnt tracks on the board, i’ve never seen any anyway.
if there is no power to the compressor, ive always changed the board and its always worked for me. – unless any one else can offer any more ideas.
If the temperature in the fridge and freezer is the same, you should get the same resistance reading from the sensors, on the board the connector with 4 wires are the sensors.
not to sure what the reading should be, not got my folder to hand. check between the brown and blue wires. – they wont bell test you need to put your meter on 20 ohms or 200 ohms.
power off when checking 🙂

What is the serial number of your fridge freezer?
You may have to replace the rear board or both if it’s an older unit.

the serial number( or is the model number ) is 8586 152 15001
can you tell me if the temp sensors are J type of K type?
if i simulate a resistance over the connectors would this possibly switch the realy and the compressor on? if so what resistence should i use?what part is it in the circuit that would normally go?
would you possibly have a circuit diagram for the back board? as trying to fault find is a bit tricky!
thanks again,

That’s the product code. The serial number is the 2nd set of numbers.

Close to the change over date, however, your machine should be fitted with the later electronics so you should only have to replace the rear board, if this is proven to be the cause.

Thanks for all your information.
the rear board was diagnosed faulty, as you described, and replaced!
thanks again
