ParticipantHi there,
I’ve got an AEG 80820 dishwasher and (whilst on an energy save 50C wash) during the rinse cycle, it’s developed a burning smell that seems to be concentrated around the top right corner. There’s no obvious burning smell from inside the dishwasher.
I’ve aborted the wash during the drying cycle and everything looks clean and was really hot as usual. Is this likely to be a me-serviceable or an engineer job?
The details are:
model: AEG F80820W
Typ: 45_1 DC1 32
PNC: 911 232 519 00
s/n: 24239006The machine is almost four years old and had its recirc pump (?) replaced two years ago owing to insufficient pressure/flow.
Thanks in advance,
Jonathan

There’s an electronic board or two in the top right hand corner of the door……. As it was in the hot rinse phase, the heater will have been activated – a solder joint from the relay may well be burning out. Electrolux Group dishwashers do seem to have a habit of doing this.
Power off if investigating.

HI Penguin45
Thanks for your reply. I’ll check, but I don’t think the smell is coming from the door, rather in the little “ventilation” gap between the dishwasher and the worktop – suggesting that the smell is coming from the back somewhere?
Can you give a vague cost for an engineer to fix the likely problems – I’d like to balance this against the cost of getting a new machine instead….

OK, I’ve had the machine apart as best I can. The burning smell only appears when the machine is heating the water (so I guess it’s not the pump).
There are no relays in the top of the door panel and there are no big enough relays in the control board. I think I’ve found the relay that controls the heater and I *think* it’s not smelly….
Is it possible that the heater is playing up? I’m presuming it’s the metal 6x3in cylinder in the pipe that feeds the upper spray arm and it’s worth having it fixed?
Can you give me a likely cost to fix plus an engineer callout?

Update: decided to call out an engineer who decided it was a problem with the heater. Turns out it was probably a dodgy contact had caused the contact block to burn out.
Result? needed a new connector on the wires and a new heater.
