ParticipantOur Hygena dishwasher (APL 8224) – hitherto v good – has for some months given problems, staring with stopping mid-cycle and needing a slight turn on the control. Now it’s stopping, as before, but the performance is down, with the dishwash tablet partially left at the end, and items not too well cleaned. The washing cycle does not seem hot enough. Can anyone out there explain the stopping and underperformaance? Heating element? (but there is some heat there) Thermostat? And, above all, is it mendable by me? I’d sure welcome any help on this.

Common faults on that one are blocked hoses from the sump to the air break in the rh side panel, this causes a lack of water inside, you may be able to clean these from inside the sump with the filter removed, otherwise its a removal job to do it porperly, also they suffer from wiring loom faults, not a recommended diy repair.

Thanks to Eastlmark (re my problems with our Hygena APL 8214 dishwasher). I cleaned out the pipe from the sump (full of deposits!) and the dishwasher now performs better but it’s still not perfect.
The total standard wash cycle is around 35 minutes (surely too short?)
I conneccted up a multimeter, and during this time the heating element comes on 3 times, for 3, 4 1/2 and 9 1/2 minutes respectively, but only when the pump is circulating water. Shouldn’t there be a period when the heating element comes on and nothing else happens till at the right temperature the thermostat switches and the programme carries on? If I am right, which component could have failed that would explain this missing part of the cycle? Would love to draw on some of the marvellous expertise out there!JohnGPick

Correct – I would suspect that your thermostat has failed in the closed position, thus not stopping the programme until temperature is reached.
P/no is 31X5632 – spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will get you one. About £12 from memory, so probably worth a punt.

Many thanks Penguin 45 (re thermostat on my Hygena APL 8214 dishwasher). Having the part number is brilliant. However, the cost is a bit steep at £22+. Can I pick the brains out there just one more time before going ahead and buying? First of all, am I right in thinking of this thermostat (31X5632) as a kind of thermal double pole switch which in the normal default setting is open or “off”? (mine is permanently closed or “on”). Secondly, is it fairly straightforward to fix? Will a firm push downwards release the thermostat? I’m worried about damaging the retaining grommet. Also, does a special sealing compound have to be used to reassemble, or can I improvise? I really would value advice on removal and reassembly – one mistake and I will have wasted my money! Thanks, JohnGPick

Don’t buy a replacement until you have tested the original………..
Now then – you can remove the original with downward pressure and you won’t damage anything. Putting it back is a complete and total s0d. You need to apply heat and see if the switches make and break. If you look at the metal skirt of the stat, it’s often embossed (for instance) 60c NA 85c NC. This means that the stat is normally open up to 60c and the secondary circuit is normally closed up to 85c. Use a heat source to gently raise the temperature and a test meter for continuity. Make a diagram before pulling the wires……….
HTH,

Thanks yet again to HTH/Penguin45 (re Hygena APL8214 probs). As advised, I took out the thermostat and tested it. It was embossed with 72 NC and 80 NC. I assume that this means both circuits remain closed till the temperature in question is reached (ie 72 & 80 Centigrade). Sure enough, under test the stat circuits opened at around 70 and 80 respectively. So it’s back to the drawing board! To recap, the present wash cycle seems too short and though the heating element works the machine never seems to pause to allow the water to heat up, though the element does click in when the circulating motor is on. Should I now suspect the timer control, or some other sensor? This has to be my last appeal for help before having to buy a new machine (ouch!) And of course my (slightly?) defective machine will probably end up on a landfill site. Thanks for reading this. JohnGPick
PS At least, thanks to Penguin45’s good advice, I didn’t waste £22+ on a thermostat!November 18, 2006 at 10:30 pm #194842eastlmark

Would suspect a broken wire in the door loom giving a false oc stat reading. Pretty crappy job to repair safely and properly to tell the truth and it is unlikey that only one wire is broken-they are probably all on the verge.

Thanks again to Eastlmark (re my problems with our Hygena APL 8214 dishwasher). As suggested, I checked the door wiring loom, but found no discontinuity, so I must now call it a day and buy a new machine. At least, with the help of this forum (especially Penguin45 & EastlMark) I gave my dying machine a fighting chance! JohnGPick
