ParticipantWe have a Hotpoint WF740. We use detergent tablets, putting two tablets in the tray before starting the wash. Sometimes these tablets are washed into the machine during filling, and all is well. Other times, they remain in the tray, sometimes as a mush, sometimes almost intact. It’s almost random whether it works propoerly or not. This has happened since the machine was new, about 6 months ago.
The machine has cold feed only. I’ve watched it fill, and water is sprayed into the tray from the jets above the drawer. All the jets around the sides of the drawer “roof” seem to spray well, although there appear to be some jets in the centre (with bosses round them) which don’t spray at all.
Further study shows that sometimes there are only one or two filling episodes at the start – it seems to be these times when the tablets don’t go in. Other times there are four or five fills, and it appears that it needs this many flushes to get the tablets dissolved and out of the tray. It also seems possible that bigger loads get more filling – maybe they soak up water so more is needed to reach the cut off level in the drum?
Thanks for any advice.

Minimal water entering the machine, especially on cotton washes – may not be sufficient to break up the tablets. The only ones I’ve ever found that dissolve fully are the Ariel ones.
Other solutions are “tablets in the mesh bag in the drum”, or go back to using powder, which will allow you more accurate control of the dosing anyway.

Interesting, I too recently experienced a gooey sludge of undissolved Ariel tablet in powder drawer. Could they have been reformulated?
You can also place the tablets (applies to Ariel, Bold, Daz & Fairy) straight into the drum, before adding clothes.
There is no need to use that infernal net bag, which is used for Persil and Surf tablets.

Thanks both, that’s most helpful – you don’t happen to know which category Sainsbury’s tablets are in, do you?

Probably somewhere in between, in the dissolvabilty stakes!
I would try the net bag approach; I don’t think they’re in the same league as Ariel tablets.

Clearly in Chris_B’s case there is a problem with the dispenser, either clogged up with gunge or limescale, and it needs a good clean at least!
However, in the case of tablets where the dispenser fails in its duty there is an alternative.(as Trilobite mentions) Simply place the tablets into the drum towards the back and then load the washing on top!
Perfect results every time. (who needs a dispenser anyway?) 🙂
