ParticipantWe have a 3 year old Servis M7684SA Fridge Freezer and its fridge section is constantly freezing up regardless of the thermostat setting. I have already replaced the thermostat with no improvement. It sounds as though the comressor is running constantly and turning the thermostat has no effect on this. There is a thin layer of ice in the back of the fridge that goes about 2/3rds of the way down and the temp at the bottom of the fridge is low enough to freeze vegetables solid, however the “self defrosting” does appear to be working as this ice layer comes and goes. The freezer seems fine. From this and other forums this seems to be a common problem with this model. Can anyone suggest what I should do next ?
Many thanks – SimonW

Hi Kenneth
Thanks for the link – very helpful but not a solution in this case.
All the door seals are fine and the only place air can get in is via the drain hole that lets the “self defrosted” water run out.
We are getting a build up of solid ice at the bottom of the fridge behind the veg drawers as well as fine layer of powdered ice on the inside back panel (no elements are visible in the fridge).
There is a little ice in the freezer but nothing drastic and the freezer appears to be working fine.
I was wondering what mechanism controls the cooling in the fridge part as all the elements appear to be in the freezer – is it a mechanically controlled air flow behind the back of the fridge or are there further hidden cooling elements?
Thanks for your help – Simon

No not a solution, but your description now helps me immensely to help you better. 😉
The thin layer of ice on the back wall is normal as it’s a wet wall cabinet. This should periodically defrost and the water disappear into a drain hole at the back below that.
Your problem lies at the bottom and there’s only really two options here assuming that the fridge is defrosting as it should be and you say it is:
The drain hole is blocked not allowing the water to flow away and what’s freezing is the spillage, in which case get a bit of long flexible wire and gently prod down the hole to clear it.
or…
There’s a possible insulation failure on the rear wall. Not repairable to all intents and purposes.
I can’t think on anything else it could be really unless someone knows any quirks on these cabinets that I don’t.
