Hi,
In the last hour my wife was scraping ice from our freezer and accidently puctured the inside with a knife 😳
A hissing sound came from the wound but only briefly, i quickly covered the wound with some silicone sealer 😕
This is an integrated larder type fridge freezer.
Question is what are my options???
Will the freezer warm up if so how quickly? Will the fridge do the same?
Look forward to some fast responses.

Oh sorry suts, it will fail very quickly indeed, you’ll be eating what’s in the freezer for breakfast.

At present the freezer is making a lot of noise, i guess the compressor is working overtime???? The tempereture seems fine though??
Just for my own education what exactly have a punctured??

One more thing, theirs a slight smell coming from inside now, i guess this is the gas escaping? is this gas harmless to man, children and dog??

No there’s no real danger bar from R600 (gas) as that’s flammable but the most you’d likely get is a little pop if anything from it.
What’s happened is that you’ve punctured the evaporator and, whilst on some it can be exchanged, it’s very rarely worth the expense and hassle of doing it. The gas runs round there in a cold state under pressure and that metal cools, thereby cooling the interior.
The moral of the story is, NEVER defrost with anything remotely sharp but in fact my advice would be to anyone, don’t chip the ice away period, let it thaw naturally.

Are the fridge and freezer 2 seperate systems or will the fridge warm up as well??

Hi there maybe you good old engineers out there can confirm this, I heard one of the best ways of defrosting a freezer was to stand a washing up bowl half full of hot (not boiling) water in the freezer, apparently this can halve the amount of time it takes to defrost and prevents puncture wounds from ocurring (how many times a day do we hear that at work) but also helps (and this is the bit I’m not sure about) to remove any odours that may be lingering…..
