Most dishwasher locks are a “turn over” mechanism. In the open position, there are two “fingers” facing forward. When the door closes, these are supposed to meet the catch in the top of the body. This is basically a transverse bar – the fingers go one either side and the mechanism flips to the vertical position, thus operating the switch.
If you cannot see two points looking at you through the opening in the top of the door, the latch mechanism may well still be in the closed position. To deal with this, you can either take the door apart (nasty) and flip the mechanism back, or find a stout piece of wire (coat hanger- perfect), make a small hook on the end and try and flip it back. Bear in mind that the latch mechanism may have failed, so it’s not a guaranteed cure.
