ParticipantHi All,
I have recently inherrited a second hand dishwasher as a temporary measure as we have just moved house.
my problem is that this Hotpoint DF61 wont release the door on the detergent cube whilst going through it’s cycle. When you close the comparment it seems to have two stages, the first partially closes the flap and if you press it again it is firmly closed. however, regardless of what position the flap is in it doesn’t open during it’s cycle. I have taken to opening the door half way through and physically opening it myself! The finished results are rubbish with baked on debris on the underside of mugs but having read the post about cleaniong out the spraying arms I will give it a go!
But can anyone shed any light on the compartment issue?
Many thanks,
James.December 7, 2006 at 11:48 am #197241iadom

The only way to be certain is to check if the small cover will flip open when you manually operate the small latch, there is a spring underneath the flap that often breaks. If that is intact then you have to remove the outer door panel and inspect the dispenser mechanism in action, some of the small levers & springs involved can break. If the whole dispenser is required there are two different ones, depending on the serial number. Unfortunately they are both over £50 + vat.
The machine is a Bosch so quite a sound model.
Please remove the plug if you intend to have a look and watch the edges of the stainless steel inner door, they are razor sharp.

Hi Jim,
I’m not sure what you mean by small latch? There is a white coloured half moon shaped catch to the side of the compartment which releases the door back to it’s first stage when pressed but it doesnt slide the door open. I was wondering if the system was designed to use powder or liquid which would wash out more easily than a modern style cube?

Can you see the spring that should force the flap open, have a look at the picture here, http://tinyurl.com/yka3rr click to enlarge it. The spring lies just under the flap close to the manual release lever. With care you can prise the flap off to examine.
A very common failure point.Jim.
PS. That Bosch part is cheaper from here than one from Hotpoint, I think it is the same one though.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for that I will have a look tonight.
How does the compartment work?
I thought that maybe the pressure of the sprayed water pushed on the manual release button and opened it!

It’s electrically operated by a small solenoid. Likely as not it will need a new slide lid and spring fitting to cure? Using liquid detergent in those dispensers is not to be recommended at all.
Usually we in the trade do not mess about repairing the dispenser but rather change it as a complete unit. Saves a lot of aggro that way! 😉

Morning Jim,
I had a look last night and the spring is still in tact!
What do you suggest next?

Unfortunately it is looking like a new dispenser complete will be needed. 😥

Depends on the serial number of your machine as there are 2 versions, one slightly dearer than the other with a cost of up to £60 I believe?
Email you enquiry giving the much needed details (i.e. Full Model and serial number) to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk 😉
