Hello all, we have a Miele W970 waheing machine that is developing a fault on the spin cycle. Functionally it is (so far) fine. But recently it has started to develop a “buzz” that increases in pitch with the speed.

I have taken the top and front off the machine and thoroughly checked it mechanically it seems fine. I’ve unplugged/replugged all the electrical connections and can see no sign of anything getting hot. When I ran the machine with the top off I noticed that at the very end of the spin when the power to the motor cuts, the noise stops instantly even though the drum is still at full speed and coasting down. Also it is clear that the noise is beneath the drum to the right where the motor is.

If I was a betting man I’d say the brushes in the motor were worn. I don’t know if this is the case but it does definately seem electrical rather than mechanical.

Is fitting a new motor a DIY job? It seems pretty awkward to get at.

I dare say a Miele motor will be an arm and a leg.

    Thanks.

Brushes by the sound of it – they are replaceable quite easily, usually as an endframe assembly. Access is simple as the front of the machine will open like a cupboard door.

Miele Spares are on 01235 233133. Credit card, seat amd stiff drink to hand are essential.

Power off if you choose to investigate.

Re: Miele W970 Fault on spin.

Thanks Penguin 45. I have had the front door open today to check all the electrical connections. It didn’t seem very easy to get to the motor. In fact I couldn’t actually see the motor, there seemed to be some sort of plastic shroud/shield in front of it. I’m guessing that since the rear panel doesnot come off and that it is very difficult to get to from the front, then if I turn the machine upside down access will be from underneath? I’ll need a crane to turn it over! LOL.

Many thanks. If I call Miele, I bet they want to sell me a new motor.

Lean the machine back to a good angle. There is a drip cover over the end of the motor retained by a couple of screws, the endframe is behind it. If you look carefully, it will have a “Tnr” number on it – that’s the Miele part number to ask for.

    Awkward, not difficult…….

£61.30p for the brushes in the cartridge assembly. Looking at the one I removed, I’m thinking I can get some standard carbons and refurbish the unit myself ready for when it needs replacing again in another 6 years! Anyone know if suitable carbons are available?

Re: Miele W970 Fault on spin.

Not that I have found to date, Steve. It is typical of the protectionist approach of Miele, though – make something slightly different, non-standard. Being a low volume product, there isn’t enough demand to make pattern parts.

Trust that the machine is now spinning happily?

    Cheers,
