ParticipantHi all, it;s Christmas and that can only mean one thing… The Oven’s BUST!
The main fan has been playing up for a while and has now stopped. I’ve had the back off and taken apart (only the big bits) the fan motor and reassembled it. The fan worked beauutifully immerdiately, letting me know that everything is fundamentally sound (I think). The whole mechanism spins freely. So I reassembled it and it worked great for about an hour then started whining a bit. That stoppeed after a while.
Now I’ve gone to cook and the fan feels stiff and absolutely isn’t twitching at all. I know that if I repeat the above it’ll work again, but I can’t keep doing this and you just know it’ll stop on Christmas Day!Should I lube anything? Is there a bearing race anywhere? Is it just fine adjustment? HELP PLEASE…
Thanks
Andrew

I’m assuming you mean the fan oven motor in the main oven? In which case:-
It needs a complete new fan motor unit (Part No 096825 available from BSH Appliance Care Ltd) or ordering via email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk 😉 Stripping and lubricating never solves their fundamental wear problem I’m afraid, also you stand the risk of blowing the fan element due to lack of air circulation! 😕

Hi Martin, thanks very much for your quick reply; that doesn’t sound too bad. Obviously I’ll have do do the bodge I described for christmas day and order the part. I’m no engineer, but I know one end of a torx from the other, so do you think I can do it myself? One important question. Are there any loaded capacitors I need to be aware of or anything else I could get a 40 amp belt from? Of course it’s off at the fusebox… so no Darwin Award hopefully.
How much does the part cost?
Very many thanks
Andy

Hi Andy, there are no stored electrical charges in the appliance so as long as it is fully isolated (double pole switch in off position, circuit breaker in off position or fuse removed from supply circuit) then there would be no electrical hazard.
As it’s Christmas you’re unlikely to get a replacement motor in time for the big day so your bodge is the next best thing…when you strip the motor again then give the bearings a thorough oiling with a heavy(ish) oil such as three-in-one or even car engine oil. As Martin said it will not give a cure but will hopefully last long enough to incinerate a turkey! 😆December 23, 2006 at 10:31 pm #198655MORKSTAR

Hi Martin & Clive; thanks so much for the responses. Bodge on the way. When I pulled the obvious bits off the fan motor assembly, I didn’t notice any captive bearing race. Could you please tell me where I should be looking for it? Sorry for the stupid questions.
Thanks again.

The motor has a spherical plain bearing in the end frame at each end of it. You need to dose these as per the other posters and keep your fingers crossed………
Power off…………

Urm, thats a bit too far. 🙁
I could of sold you a fan motor 8)
Once you have the oiled fan running, don’t let it stop untill the turkeys done. 😉

Shouldn’t disgree with the experts, but on a U1661 (same arrangement?) I notice when the fan starts to get a bit sluggish starting up. I then strip and clean and relubricate it. Kept it going 7 years like this. It gets a build of of cooking fat behind the fan that slowly clogs it up. HTH.
