ParticipantHi
We have a Bosch SGS5302GB/07, about 10 years old. Detergent dispenser long since stopped opening during washes, so we have been using a basket which hooks onto the side of the cutlery basket into which we put an Ecover 🙂 tablet. This had worked ok for about a year or so. However, recently, we have regularly (though not every time – about 4 out of 5) been getting a sandpaperish, more-or-less invisible, coating/residue on the top rack items in particular (except plastic cups). I regularly check the arms for rotation, blockages in the holes, and also the filters. Salt has been filled up to the top recently too (prior to that I used to fill it when red light came on). Rinse aid I assume goes in the hole next to the base of the arrow (the arrow point is to number 4. How much should you squirt in?). We are in a hard water area.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Is it time to get a new one or can this be fixed? Of new models, which would be best of Beko DWDS410, Bosch SGS53C12GB or Hotpoint Aquairius FDW20P or FDW60P? Needless to say I’d rather keep the old one.
Thanks

Ecover just doesn’t work……. Yellowish deposits are a known issue with it. I would get the soap dispenser replaced and change to something like Fairy Bursts. Fill the rinse-aid chamber, top off the salt and you will find the dishwasher will quickly revert to excellent cleaning.
Dispenser is p/no 263088, £33.02 + VAT + Dely. An email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will get things moving for you if you wish to do the job yourself.
If you have to change the machine, the Bosch is the only one on your list worth buying.

Thanks – is it easy to replace soap dispenser? How’s it done? I think this does sound the best option.

Hi Comet,
Forum rules – we can’t walk you through the job. If you take the door outer panel off, it’s pretty obvious.Power off, of course and mind the edges of the door, you can shave with them.

Ok, thanks. I have since tried using Fairy bursts on the top of the cutlery basket (which the packet instructions say you can do anyway if the burst doesn’t fit in the dispenser) and have topped up rinse aid. Still the same sandpapery residue problem (though not quite so bad as with Ecover). I don’t want to change the dispenser if the residue problem is still going to be there.

You’re going to have to run it for a while before the residue disappears……..

Sounds more like a water pressure starvation problem to me? Insufficient water into the machine caused by a blockage in the sump transfer hose most likely?
Easy test is to turn the machine on for a few minutes (say 5 mins or so) to allow the machine to fill up and start washing. Switch it off, open the door and check how much water in the tub. It should be lapping around the salt container lid (but not covering it)?
Worth a look I reckon? 😉

i’d agree that it is probably a metering tank fault caused by a partially blocked sump hose. when the machine is running you’ll most likely hear the water surging up to the top spray arm then falling back and repeating its self. when you open the door and check the water level you could top it up the the salt cap and run it. you’ll hear the difference but of course that wont have cured the problem.
lying the empty unplugged machine on it’s back will reveal the hose about one and half inch diameter. try to clear it if you can. i’d of course be removing the side panel but we can’t advise you to do that.December 31, 2006 at 12:35 am #198677Penguin45

Sorry Keith, this is one of the later closed tray machines, there is no access from underneath. Martins comment is perfectly valid, the transfer pipe in the front left corner may well be resticted, causing underfilling. Access is through the front – kick panel and inner cover plate have to go, removing the door outer panel will improve access as well.
Power off, of course.

Thanks for the tips – it took me a while to find the time, but it was the pipe gunged up in lower left hand corner. I also took the left hand side panel off and cleared out some other gungy looking pieces. 😀 8) 😆
