The door on this machine just drops open. Ive been told that the hinges at the bottom of the door which attach the door to the body have gone and that it is irrepairable. Does this sound likely?

Not the hinges, it will be the counterbalance mechanism which has failed. You will need:
4812 404 48591 – brake block
4812 401 18397 – brake bandYou are advised to get two of each and do both sides together.
