    Hello, I have just moved to a house with a tiny wee kitchen. I am going to buy a freezer to keep in the separate garage. I remember a long time ago in school I heard that there were special freezers for keeping outside? Is this correct? I will be living in the Cotswolds so I suspect the temp isn’t going to get too low. The garage is perfectly sound and the freezer would be kept on the back wall (at the corner of one shared, one external wall).

    are there any recommendations, any thing I should look for? I would prefer an upright freezer if possible. I looked on all sorts of websites and none seem to mention freezers with a particular rating for being kept in a garage.

    Hi Joe,

    Yes there are problems with this sort of use and, sadly, usually very badly explained by the stores.

    There is a load of info in the forums on this if you do a search for “garage” I expect.

    Essentially most machines you buy will not be climate rated to cope with the low winter temperatures or, very often, the high summer ones in such locations. Generally this will lead to condensation on the cabinet and, ultimately, insulation failure which is the death knell pretty much. Even before they fail under these conditions the machines run for extended periods innefficiently which will almost certainly bump up your electricity bill quite substantially.

    Bob Hope put up a good post a short while ago explaining the climate ratings.

    Hi, thanks for your response and for pointing me in the right direction….! seems to be a bit of a minefield but the tip about the greenhouse heater may be a good one, just to keep the temp above the magic 10C.

    The climate ratings are generally for fridges or fridge freezers. Freezers can run in a garage without any problems as long as it is only a freezer as your ambient temperature will not affect its performance. Fridge freezers will not work in a garage if the appliance is operated by one mechanical thermostat which runs the fridge compartement .

    If you get a freezer without a thermostat you will be fine

    Sorry folks, but freezers do have problems in colder rooms as laid out in that article. It’s not cut and dried at all and the best bet is either not to bother or pay attention to the climate class or ambient temperatures for operation as advised by the manufacturer.
