KeymasterI am currently looking into the possibility of upgrading the forum.
Quite simply the sheer volume of traffic and posts is sort of forcing me to look at it. This will take a bit of time to get organised as there’s a lot of work at the backend to be done to make it happen and migrate. It also means that the forums may be offline for a few hours to do it when it happens.
However, here’s the discussion part…
So far there’s a shortlist of one. vBulletin.
If there’s any others that you think I should be looking at please let me know here.

Hi Ken
I think you mentioned a while back that there used to be a Public Classifieds Forum 😕 ? How about putting that back, but with a difference…. UKW gets a small percentage of the amount an item is sold. Just my two pence worth but Im sure UKW could do with some extra revenue, obviously if viable 😀Greg

Technically that’s hard to do Greg and besides there’s loads of places, such as Ebay, that people can use for that sort of thing. I also doubt that there would be enough revenue generated to justify the cost of it.

V.Bulletin gets my vote. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/ & http://www.chetnet.co.uk/ are two forums that I have used for many years, both run vBulletin and have features that I find better than PHP.

php is a server side scripting language ie it is a programming language used to create whatever. vbulletin is v good cant remember if it supports rss feeds though which invision does. everything is worth a look though 😉

The short answer to that one is, not much really.
Some of the newer boards simply offer more features, better moderation facilities, better admin facilities, thread merging (useful on here ;)) and a host of other little “nice to haves”.
The other thing is that we move away from an open source board so there’s less chance of hacking I’m told.

Yes there are mods to allow for an RSS feed for vBulletin as well as a host of other things. 😉

If you go to the first of the two forums in my post you can see that feeds, Atom & RSS 2.0 are activated and available from the small icon next to ‘Home’ on IE 7 Menu bar, although it appears that IE 7 does not support feeds with DTD’s, whatever they might be. 😕
Jim.
PS. If you do go down the v.Bulletin route please don’t activate the reputation options. 😥 😉

Well according to my rep score at Cableforum I am a pillar of society. 😳 The little green then gold pips increase with your rep, as does your power when giving them out.
It does cause some heated arguments amongst some people though.
PS. Hope you like my avatar and sig on CF. 😉
