After inspection i found one of the coils from the heater element had snapped/broken, so i replaced it. Unfortunatley this did not cure the problem. On the cold tumble setting the drum turns. Any program associated with heat the ‘active’ and ‘drying light swithes on there is a ‘click’ sound from inside the dryer and the heating element goes wildly orange and hot to the point of burning!! After several conflicting solutions from appliance repair centres i rang the hotpoint repair centre who said it would almost certainly be the thermostats which i reluctantly changed. Still the same thing is happening. Have you any ideas.
Certainly not the thermostats……… Does the motor not run on any of the heat programmes? It fulfils two functions; firstly to turn the drum, secondly to run the fan, which will take the heat off the elements.

The motor will not run on an heat setting, although on the cold tumble setting both the motor and the fan run fine without the element heating up?

If wiring to replacement heater was done correctly i would suspect dryness module. Power off if you are going to look yourself.

baz, you mention being able to see the elements glowing orange and getting very hot, how did you manage to see this? If you are running the machine with the back panel removed then this is exactly what will happen within 10 to 20 seconds. No back means no air flow from the fan blowing through the elements, ergo bright orange glow.
If the ‘drying light ‘ goes out when the machine does the short reverse tumble then that suggests that the dryness module is OK.
Without actually being able to see the machine or hear the ‘click’ you mention it is difficult to advise you further on this, one other possiblity has been touched on already, did you disturb any of the motor wiring when you replaced the heating elements.Jim.

Thanks for your advice Jim, Penguin and Steven.
Originally i started the dryer with the back panel on but the there was a smell of burning from the element area so i removed it just to check it was the element that was burning. After your advice i would assume the element is doing this becasue the fan is not turning on the heat setting.
Is there any part i can remove and take into a test centre to check whether it is faulty?January 8, 2007 at 5:29 pm #199880iadom

Very few parts that you could do this with. I am assuming that the motor was running on all settings before you fitted the heater. The wiring harness for the heater does run close to the motor wiring & capacitor, have you double checked that area ?
