ParticipantMy understanding is that washing machine detergent has built in softener, and if in a hard water area you need to use a larger dose. So if you use a good detergent, and use the correct dose for your water hardness – should you need to use any other product like Calgon?
Does Calgon merely allow you to use less detergent or does it do something detergent can’t. If it doesn’t, why would Miele and Bosch “recommend” it? And if it does, why doesn’t every washing machine manufacturer recommend it?

Ah, if you attended the UKW detergent training you would know that one of the vital ingredients in the make-up of a detergent tablet is called a “Builder“…..a water softener in fact. 😉
Calgon is yet another product seeking commercial backing from the highest bidder, nothing more. 8)

No.
As Martin rightly points out the builders do that in any decent detergent.

This is exactly what my stance has been, but Miele recommending it confused me enough to want some back up. My theory has been that Miele are happy to promote it because it helps ensure the Miele washer lasts longer.

I did know Martin – “My understanding is that washing machine detergent has built in softener”. The thread title was rhetorical 🙂
