ParticipantWhere is the heater element located in a Hotpoint WD 22W & what sort of task is it to replace ❓
I have read quite a number of questions/answers on this site & I am extremely optimistic about the response
cheers

I have replaced wash heater but m/c still the same.
ie:stops after filling, agitates but will not go any further on the programme. Is it thermostat?

If you put the programme dial on the rinses does it progress through the cycle?
Have you tried running the machine with the economy button pushed in?

Even if the heater was faulty on this machine it would still complete a full cycle, the only noticable problem would be poor wash results on heavily soiled clothes. It may be time to get some expert help before you end up changing more parts that you do not/may not need. I assume you checked the displaced heater element for continuity/resistance before you removed it from the machine ?
Jim.
PS. there is no thermostat on the wash side of this machine.

My domestic operative tells me that if she tweaks it past the point where the m/c just agitates it continues thro the programme.Economy button ceased to work a long time ago.

Sorry no I did not check heater element for continuity/resistance as my domestic operative assured me it was the element that was at fault.
I am only a diy geezer who must at all times obey “her that must be obeyed”If there is no thermostat in this model …what controls the temperature?

What makes you believe the economy button has ceased to work?
I have never had an economy button fail.If you select the economy option this would allow the machine to skip the heating section of the wash. Therefore if there was a fault with the parts involved with the heat stage of the cycle they would not be in the circuit with economy selected.
I agree with jim, i think its time to call out someone who can check all parts and wiring for you. This could save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

A small electronic device, slotted into the front of the heater called a thermistor, together with the control unit.

The economy button will not budge it has completly
siezed up. Other buttons are okJim
I am now at a loss
The element that I removed did not have a thermistor in it nor are there any connectors for a thermistor to attatch to.
When I ordered the element online, whichever web site I went into (checking prices) they all quoted c/w thermistor, but until you so kindly informed me what it was I was in the dark.
There is something at the side of the heater element which has electrical connectors to it but obviously I haven’t a clue what this is.

That is the thermistor on these older ones. You should get a reading in kOhms if you meter it.

Can I assume then that although the element I have put in has a thermistor (although not connected because it is a newer version than the one I removed) the element itself should still work if everything was ok, and my problem lies elsewhere?
I’m no engineer so am unable to meter existing one.

ParticipantRe: Heater Element/Hotpoint Washer Dryer WD 22W
Correct. It’s a variable resistance device – the resistance is cross checked on the electronic board to ascertain the temperature. Possible faults are the heater (eliminated by substitution), thermistor, wiring, electronics, timer.
It may be an oldie, but it is a technically complex machine. Without a test meter and the knowledge to use it, you have little chance of repairing it.
Time to send for the pros, perhaps?

ParticipantThanks a lot for everybodys input.I have one more avenue to explore. I live in a flat and the fellow upstairs has such a device so will seek his assistance to check the things you mentioned.
Thanks again :salute:
