Difficult to be precise, only a full strip down would reveal the overall state of the machine. The drum support may be corroded or have a damaged shaft, the inner drum may have damaged the heater due to the bearing failure, the pump worn & noisy or if original, leaking. The motor bearings could be worn, the control timer, internal On/Off contacts could be suspect, the internal hoses could be perished or brittle etc, etc. So much ot check on a machine of this age. I repair lots of them and much older ones as well but all of the above age related problems need to be taken into consideration.

Please be sure to remove the mains plug if you intend to proceed.

Thanks Jim, your right the age of the machine is a major consideration.
Also I have just read in the forums aout someone whose machine is banging and throwing itself around, something ours does occassionaly, it has been suggested that is a fractured shaft or spider – lot of work as well as more expense!
Just been looking around the net, there looks to be some good Whirlpool and Bosch machines for two to three hundred pounds.
The wife likes the Hotpoint as it is cream, a colour not currently available. Minor considration though.
    Thanks again,
    Steve

Go with the Bosch every time.
