    Bosch dishwasher SGS5312GB/12

Some advice …..went to Bosch dishwasher today with fault no power….did a number of checks and diagnose pcb failure…no reason to think I have misdiagnosed at this point as supply to board but no display but customer claims to be an electrical engineer!!!! anyway explained either new pcb or repair existing….customer refused repair and just paid call out fee £20….anyway he rang this evening and and said HE has removed the pcb ( has not marked up wires by the way ) and now would like pcb repaired…..Im not sure what to do….I know the edge connectors supposedly only fit one way but bad experience shows this isnt true…also what else has this guy done?…as a golden rule I dont touch an appliance where a diyer has had a go!!! has anyone got a diagram for this appliance?

Im really just sounding off to get some opinions from anyone who has been in similar position. What would you do? dealing with customers isnt my strong point……

    your advice is greatly needed!!!!

    Col,

Would advise you walk away from it, you havent lost anything yet ( in fact u got yer £20} but you could open a right can of worms as you cannot be sure what this guy has done to it !!

You can get parts listings from BSH on their website but not to sure about technical info, but I am sure someone on UKW could help on info.

Trying to think of a way out now without upsetting him…LOL

    Thanks for advice

    Hi Col
With that module, its no problem as plugs are all keyed and will probably dangle in a lined up position opposite its correct location anyway 😀
I take it the door lock/onoff switch arrangement checks out ok?
    Module is 264877 £90.20 + costs retail.

    Hi Guys,
I would walk away from it too, you gave him the chance, he’s on his own now.
You can bet if he gets a module and fluff’s it up he’ll blame you anyhow!
Isn’t this just the typicall pig headed arogant attitude of the general public these days, if their all experts why the hell do they call us in the first place?? 👿
Tell him to get knoted! 😀
Went to a dishwasher the other day said not emptying on the call sheet, this was true but the moronic ‘have a go hero’ had taken the door off completly!!! WHY? Walked away from it as wasn’t prepared to pay (was under warrranty), management stood by me.
Not bad considering he wanted me sacked 😆

Well Col I would advise him that you have found out the PCB cannot be repaired and he will have to pusrchase a new one in excess of £150.00, that should put him off the repair, in future I suggest you have a phone at home that has caller ID on it so you answer only numbers you know after a certain time and the rest goes to ansaphone, then its up to you if you call a customer or not.

I dont like the idea of a customer visiting your home address either, not a good idea mate, try and keep business and home sepearate to some degree if possible beleive me you dont need the hassle 24/7.

Spot on…..I thought I was the only one that thought like that….looking through UKWG I see many posts from guys repairing DIY disasters…..why do they do it? are they desperate for the work?

Re: Customer removed parts? some advice from the wise

    Thanks all…

Greg yes door lock checks out ok…..got supply to pcb just doesnt light up display….

Some sound advice from you all…..

Dave id love to keep business and home separate….buggers keep knocking on my door….(Thanks Yellow Pages for insisting and placing my address at bottom of ad!!!!)but not this year at last…..LOL as for the phone caller ID…I must confess I cant help myself….when the phone rings at some ungodly hour I just have to find out who the hell thinks an appliance repair is important enough to disturb someone so late!!!! but really must grow up a bit and ignore it ringing!!!!!

I recon my job is easy except for the customers..im always amazed at just how arrogant and down right stupit they can be (not all just a few!!!)

Im thinking of making a TV show called “Customers from Hell”…

has anyone got some thay could include in the show….LOL

    Cheers for advice guys

Went to a restaurant today where the customer said the machine wasn’t heating. Turned up, turned the machine on, no power. Looked for a switch on the wall- no isolating switch, straight to the 3phase fusesbox. Hmmm. Nothing was earthing so turned the machine on, filled but didn’t heat. Then the customer walked in and sheepishly said ‘Um, you’d better know, one of my customers is an apprentice sparky and he had a look, it went bang and hasn’t worked since, can you find out what he did and repair it?’. Packed tools, turned it off at the fuse box, told him to get an isolating switch fitted on the wall (not by an apprentice), and phone us back when it’s all in place. Like you’ve said, you just don’t know what they’ve done. When it’s all ready for us I’ll send a couple of boys down with a quote for a full days work to go through everything bit by bit, only way to ensure it’s working fine.

Re: Customer removed parts? some advice from the wise

I have learnt over the years that there is one advantage working for yourself which is its YOU who makes the decision if you want to do the job and not the client. The others are correct walk away from this one it has a bad vibe.

What happens if you get the module PCB repaired or supply a brand new one and return and fit the part and it go’s bang, hows this big fella gonna react then ? meantime its you that has paid out for the part and in addtion have to face this guy.

Sometimes you have to get to the point with these types and tell them straight that you won’t be doing the job and you don;t have to give a reason either. Get the part he’s left with you and take it back to him and tell him that unfortunately you cannot proceed with the repair due to insurance reasons or the like and get rid of him !

I was called to fit a V2 tub only to find everything but the cabinet in a big cardboard box wiring looms the lot, i asked who stripped it down was told it was her hubby who is a mechanic, after a few curses i set to work just short of 2 hours for a v2 tub, as i finished in walks hubby ah! you got it sorted okay i retorted next time my gearbox plays up i’ll strip it down shove it in a box for you to rebuild for me, he agreed he was out of his depth and it was the missus nagging him to try and fix it.

This guy is such a good electrical engineer he cant fix it!!!!! Beggars belief. I have these types myself, they know how it works and what the prob is then proceed to tell us how to repair!!!!

Keep your twenty quid Col, let him sort it. Remember peoples you are in the driving seat, you know your job, they assume they do, if they become stroppy, if they are mechanically minded or an electrical engineer then talk tekky to them, you will soon realise they know damn all. If they talk tekky back then revert to how the machine works (only in part) and then say that’s all there is to it so now you can do it as well? They become flustered and say ‘ah well er yes’. I had a smart person before crimbo who is an electrical engineer, has his own business and was telling me over the phone what the problem and was and how to rectify it. To him it was the electronic card (timer) on a SMEG dishwasher that was it plain and simple. But in fact it is the air-break blocked from sink waste, he said to me he would pick up any parts required just give him the address and he would make sure I had the job done by crimbo. I told him the parts come from Italy (shut him up that did). Is the job done, well put it this way………. Not yet.

Col my friend, WALK AWAY and keep your good reputation in tact,

    Dave

Dont get involved with this one. I would give him his money back as then he cant hold you to the agreed estimate.

Re: Customer removed parts? some advice from the wise

Thanks to all that offered advice…..I called this guy and explained the situation to him and he got all unnecessary on me, calling me cowboy etc…oh and did mention Traders from Hell!!!!! So original!!! He couldn’t understand why him removing the part made any difference to the repair!!!! Anyway I didn’t cash the cheque he gave for the call out, so he cant complain to much I don’t think. Should be a part ‘P’ equivalent for Have a go hero DIY appliance repairs I think!!!!

I hope it is the last I hear of him……

Out of interest this guy mentioned he had a problem with a repairer before…..I suspect for the same reason…Im sure we should start a register of bad customers so we dont get caught again…..I dont mean putting your normal awkward customers on it……as thats just part of the job but ones who don’t pay or cause considerable hassle……Not sure of legal side but surely we can protect ourselves!!!!! Only needs be county, Town, Street and surname?????

What do you all think? Col

Well done Col, don’t have nightmares you’ve done the right thing, and none of us really needs customers like that 😆

As far as a register goes it would be a nice idea but a legal minefield best left avoided IMO
