ParticipantHi all,
Recently our LG has been making a banging noise when spinning, as if it is overloaded (it isn’t).
It moved the drum so violently the other night, that it started gouging into the door seal.
I recall this machine having a sensor that would “back off” the spin when it sensed it being out of balance.
Anyone got any suggestions? I had a quick look inside for anything obvious, like broken springs etc.
Any help greatly appreciated as the local domestics don’t really want to touch it.Regards,
Col

If it’s catching the door seal, you definitely have a problem as the drum is running off centre.
Possibilities are:
1) Drum bearings failed. Turn the drum by hand and listen for a dull rumbling sound. Next, try and lift the inner drum at the 12 o’clock position. If you see slight movement relative to the door seal inner edge, the bearings may well be failing.
2) Drum support failure. There is a three legged support bolted to the back of the drum, one (or more) arms may have broken. To check, turn each paddle to the 6 o’clock position in turn and try to pull the inner drum towards you. It should feel rock solid. If you find that the drum moves at one position, you have a broken support. This will give you some good insight:

Thanks for the reply.
I’ve tried turning the drum and checking for roughness and rumbling, it feels OK. There doesn’t appear to be any movement by lifting it either.
On your second point, is the support you are talking about located between the inner and outer drums?
If this is the case, is it a serviceable item? How difficult would a repair like that be?Regards,
Col

This is a drum support (Not yours, example only):
http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.p … cts_id=144It’s bolted to the back of the inner drum.
The front will come off, but the tank is a “clam shell” construct, so the whole lot’s got to come out. Time and patience main thing required. Oh, and a deal of brute force 😀 .

Hello again,
Just stripped off the belt and made sure bearings were indeed OK, no problems there.
While the belt was off I checked for movement between outer and inner drum, There was nothing at all. I checked at all 3 paddle positions as suggested. Does this mean the spider support is OK?
I noticed when the top and back was off, that if the tub is pushed forward (which it is surprisingly easy to do) the the inner drum rubs on the door seal.
Going back to a point I asked previously, is the machine not supposed to be able to detect imbalance and slow the drum accordingly?Regards,
Col

yep, they do, most of em have these days
but its not a sensor, and, not trying to be too tecbnical here, its a method used by the control board measuring how the motor deals with the load, its not set in stone.. and for reference, the lg models have been known to do that, u sure both suspension leg are attatched at the bottom of the drum?
hope this helps,

Just checked again, both lower suspension legs are indeed attached. I really don’t know what else it could be.
I feel like stuffing a big piece of foam down the front of the tub to restrict the forward travel. lol
Any other tests that can be performed? I’m getting a bit desperate now.Regards,
Col

please, humour me
even though all machines use out of balance protection, theyre prone to not functioning correctly
have u tried the machine again since?
have u tried putting a full load in, ensuring that articles are placed in the drum one by one, so as to ensure they arent tangled…
make sure its got quite a good load, it could have been fooled into thinking its a good load, when it isntis your machine a direct drive or a belt driven one?
is it distributing correctly.. i.e are the clothes seperating and distributing themselves as u look in the drum when its distributing? (its not an easy thing to spot, does require some experience)
it could be distributing too fast/slow, not allowin the weight to be balanced
lgs arent prone to failure, in fact, theyre more reliable than most, bearings have been an issue on some models, but they tend to go more noisy than nething
let us know how u get on
thanx

Thanks for your reply,
It wasn’t just the one time it misbehaved, it has done it a few times now. The worst time was in the middle of a spin with a near full load, that was when it gouged the door seal a bit. Bits of seal in with the washing etc.
When I’m rocking the tub with the top off, it really is very easy to push it all the way forward so that the inner drum touches the door seal (and impedes it’s rotation). Are the top support springs liable to sag enough to allow this? (I’m not really a complete numpty, but it’s horses for courses)If so, are they available as spares (did a quick search no luck thus far).Much Obliged so far

ParticipantRe: LG WD1255FHB Banging when spinning
are there 3 springs or just 2?
are all 3 on?
maybe, just maybe, theres sumthing stuck between the two drums (always remember ANYTHING is possible in whitegoods land!)
it really does sound like a drum support problem to be honest.. pulling at the drum doesnt always confirm this, but spinning a 7kg load at 1200 revs does, believe me, the only way to be really sure is to take it out and look, would explain the door seal bein gouged to be honest

Hi Again …(sorry).
There are only 2 springs supporting the upper part of the tub, but I remember seeing 3 in an exploded diagram on some site. (left side as viewed from front). The 3rd spring did not have an item no’ of corresponding part no. so I didn’t really pay attention.
Can you confirm that it should have 3?
Still no luck tracking them down as parts.Regards,
Col

ParticipantRe: LG WD1255FHB Banging when spinning
all the ones ive seen have 3
if you look at the tub, if the 2 springs arent on the same place on the tub(either side), then theres one missing!!!
that would answer a lot of questions
id check that first, if its snapped, it will be in there somewhere….
