ParticipantHi, I hope I am putting this in the right section and that its the right kind of question!
I’m looking to buy a tall fridge for my kitchen which will soon be installed but I have no idea what one to get! I am hoping to pay less than £400, but feel its important to get a reliable model so would pay more, rather than make a false economy.
So far I have seen the Whirlpool ARG979/4 with a good recommendation – are there any others I should take a look at?
Thanks in advance

The Whirlpool is a good choice without a doubt. Only other one to take a look at before making a final decision would be the Hotpoint HL232i

I will be honest with you Don, I would not buy whirlpool fridge because;
They are making disposable fridges now a days that means you cannot do major repairs(Re-gas or compressor change)if it goes wrong. They use aluminum pipes that cannot be connected to the metal pipes unless you have a special big setup for this which I am sure most of the engineers don’t.
They are good company but just because of that reason,i don’t like them.
Also if you are spending £400 on whirlpool that means if you have to Re-gas it in few years time(which costs around £100 for other fridges) you may have to change it.Also make sure that you get good ventilation for your fridge.
Hope it make sense.

Trouble is Fairdeal, the appliance that marge is looking at is a built in column larder fridge which reduces the choice as not many manufacturers produce these. As soon as the term “built in” is applied to appliances the price rockets too, so £400 odd for one of these types is not uncommon. I was trying to give marge another option which she may have not known about.
As far as any actual repairs to compressors etc are concerned I am in the hands of the engineers on this forum as I am not an engineer myself.

ParticipantThanks very much for your input Don. I’ll take a look at the Hotpoint, and as you say, there don’t seem to be very many to choose from at the moment, so I’ll probably choose from between these two unless anyone else can suggest another 🙂

Just wondered if I could throw another model in for comments:
Liebherr KE2440
Oddly, I can’t see it on their own website (which kind of puts me off it) but it is sold here:

Good price and according to Kelkoo it`s in stock at Appliance World. Usual high quality you get from the German manufacturers. Only downside is by ordering from the net there is no installation service. A good independant retailer however can save you lots of hassle and take care of everything for you.

ParticipantThanks Don.
I appreciate what you’re saying but we are getting the kitchen fitted by a local tradesman and he will install the fridge for us. I guess the problem will be if something goes wrong with the fridge, in which case we will be looking for someone local to help us – do you think the fact its a lesser known brand (Liebherr) it will be a problem, rather than, say, the Whirlpool one??
Thanks again. 🙂January 19, 2007 at 8:53 am #201108don

They may well be lesser known but the quality of both product and service is excellent. My advice ……………go for it 😉
