ParticipantHi
I noticed earlier that my washer was making a scraping noise as it attempted to spin. The next thing, all the power went off in the house. I knocked off the machine and reset the trip and power all back on. Since then, the drum won’t turn at all. I just tried to put it on spin and the lights came on and it made the usual noise and the clicks etc that signal the start of the spin, but no life or movement in the drum at all. What would that scraping noise indicate? All help gratefully appreciated. Thanks Linda

Hi Linda
It sounds like the brushes have failed in the motor however if it managed to trip the RCD there’s a distinct possibility the motor and/or pcb hasn’t survived 😥
Turn the drum slowly by hand and listen for a clicking noise….if you hear one then the motor is a gonner. If not then it’s worth an engineer visit though, if it’s just a set of brushes required then it would be well worth doing IMO

Thanks Clive,
Turned the drum slowly and can’t hear a clicking sound so hopefully motor ok. Where do I get new brushes for this particular model please? Havn’t got a clue about these things. My dad reckons he could change the brushes for me.Linda

Have a look in Shop@ in the navigation box for the brushes however I would strongly recommend you get professional help as (1) you confess you haven’t got a clue about these things and (2) there may be other damage caused by the nature of the fault.
If you insist on having a go yourself then you must unplug the machine before doing anything :zap:

Hi
If you can hear a distinct click click as you turn the drum by hand, and combine that with the RCD tripping, it looks like you will be looking at the motor being damaged and possible damage to electronic module.
Just to give you an idea of what parts may be required –Module – 432218 – £93.20
Motor – 141875 – £144.20Prices are ex VAT and postage. If parts are required, then they are available from spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk If you feel unable to repair yourself then feel free to locate a local engineer form the link below.
Please remember if you are to attempt any fault finding or repair on the appliance, please un-plug prior :plug:

OMG 😯 😯
It would be cheaper to buy a new machine if that’s the case. my machine is 6 years old but….. I have 3 kids and 2 very dirty mud magnet cocker spaniels so machine has been used on average twice a day, sometimes 3 times a day for the past 6 years. (havn’t put the cockers in the machine, just the bedding 😆 )

Hi
Thats not bad for six years being used more or less semi-commercially, just goes to show what a good machine it was. With the workload you have you would probably be better with a true top loader eg – Maytag or Whirlpool, these would cope easily with your demands.

Mmmmmm will have to look into it, I did love that Bosch machine. Had a hotpoint before it and couldn’t believe how quiet the Bosch was compared to the hotpoint.
Ah well, I’m off to search for a new machine, I love washing 😆 I like to watch the drum going round, good therapy, I need it with my lot 😀
Thanks for all your advice, this is a great site!!!!!

Just a quick update, my dad came this morning and had a look and one of the carbon brushes was tight in the holder, it had a groove on one side so he filed it with an emery board and put it back in and machine working perfectly again 😀 😀 Happy days again!!!!

Hi Linda
Thats good news, it did sound bad when you said it was clicking when you turned the drum; thats a good sign of damage to the commutator of the motor where the brushes touch.
To give the best advice now I would change the brushes now to ensure no further or lasting damage to motor. They are relatively cheap compared to a motor and/or module.
If you can give the full model number (around door inner and rear) then I can advise which ones you may require. I will probably need the make of the motor also, either – Siemens or FHP, it will be on a label on the motor.Regards
Greg

Glad you got it sorted Linda…incidentally the groove is caused by a retaining spring finger which is used to lock the brush when the motor is assembled and I myself have come across one or two like that. The better repair is to bend the finger out a little so it doesn’t contact the brush but if your dad was careful not to file too much away then it should be a successful repair! (and a whole lot cheaper than a new machine!) 😆

Thanks guys,
Incidentally, I forgot to mention in my original post that my dad changed the brushes about 4 months ago. I ordered them off the Bosch spares site, but although I gave the correct model no and serial no, the end tags on the fly leads were not the same shape as the original worn brushes, so my dad soldered the original end tags onto the new brushes. I have looked in the whitegoods shop@ for brushes for future use and they also seem to be the wrong shape on the end tags, yet they are listed under my make and model serial no as the correct part. Should I take a photo of the ones I need and send it to the parts shop?

machine is a Bosch Maax WFL 2260 UK/04 FD 8102 605 695
I don’t know what make the motor is though, and my dad had the thing in his hands this morning an all!!!!
Thankyou so much for your help, don’t want to have to solder those end tags onto every new set of brushes I have. It’s a worry that they’re soldered as it is, in case the solder comes off.
Thanks

Hi Linda
Thats great , but you will need to get your dad to take motor off again to get the motor make as there are two possible that were fitted. 😡
If its a Siemens (most popular) you will need 154740 app £25 + Costs
If its an FHP then you will need 173028 app £31 + costs.
Both available from spares@ukwhitegoods.co.ukGreg
