ParticipantHello. I’m new to this forum and regret not finding it earlier.
I have been given a very very old Candy Washer Drier that hasn’t done a load of washing for around 6 years. The machine is approximately 15 years old!. It was rarely used before that as the owners had it in their 2nd property and they only used the house if they were at the theatre in Edinburgh. It has never been kept anywhere but its previous owners fitted kitchen. I ran it through an empty cycle when I got it plumbed in here and it worked fine. My troubles only started when I tried to do a full load of washing. It cant seem to agitate the washing by moving the drum. If I do a half load with half the water there is no problem. If there is no water in the machine it can turn all the clothes over and over again. It spins perfectly well and the pump works fine. The drier part of the machine also works really well.
Is my problem the motor being near the end of its life or maybe it has dirt in it? Could it just be the fact that its lain unused for such a long time? I thought it was the belt but that appears not to be mishapen.
I would greatly appreciate any help and advice.
Regards
Ann

Hi Ann,
It’s one of two things wrong most likely…
The drum pulley is dodgy, either needs stripped and greased or replaced.
Or…
The motor capacitor is duff.
Either way it’s actually not that bad to put right if you know what you’re doing. I’ve done enough of them to know. 😉
If you do strip the pulley you must be careful not to damage any of the pins, it must be stripped to grease and you must use a high heat black graphite grease. If you damage anythign there’s no spares available, although I will probably have a pulley for the 1000rpm one, I can’t recall offhand what the T27 is, I think it was 1000rpm.

Thank you for your very prompt reply. I’ll show my hubby it as he is the more technical part of our partnership. The machine has a top spin of .. wait for it ……………. 800 LOL. Like I said. Its like something out of the ark. I’ll post back again when he’s had a look at it.
Many Thanks.
Ann

Even better in some ways TBH. 😉
In all honesty, bar the pulley jamming and the odd failure of the dryer fan (plastic ones) those machines were actually pretty solid and really didn’t give too much trouble despite Candy’s reputation. Certainly not much that was too much of a hassle to put right anyway.
Then they bought Hoover and things changed, for the worse. 😕

Thanks again.

well my hubby watched the machine from the back with the back off and he says the belt isn’t slipping. Nothing appears to have jammed either. Anything else you can suggest anyone?

KeymasterIt will only slip with a load in it as it steps up to the final spin. 😉
If it’s not slipping then the cap is the likely culprit.

doh!
Will he be able to change it himself? He has a fairly unusual motor car and has to fix a lot of its problems himself as no-one likes to touch it. Garages turning away work – can you believe it?, so he is quite good at stripping things down and replacing bits and bobs. What tools will he need to change the cap?
Thanks for all your help BTW.February 2, 2007 at 5:01 pm #202742cosworthlady
