    Hi,

    I have a Philips ADG 666 dishwasher (circa 1992 ish) that has started to smell. The odour is hard to describe but is sort of “eggy”.

    The smell seems to be on the items that have been washed (particularly crockery and glasses), the inside of the dishwasher does not seem to smell. If plates are taken out of the diswasher in the morning (it is put on last thing at night) they often have very little odour but after 30 min or so the smell gets steadily stronger untill you can smell it just by walking past the plate rack.

    All loose food is always removed prior to loading, the internal filter has been regularly removed and cleaned and the remaining water left in the sump is clear, the spray arms have been removed, cleaned out and then bleached with neat solution (as has the inside of the dishwasher its self, aprox 1 pint of bleech poured into the machine and left for an hour) and all the rubber seals were cleaned of grime Following this the dishes did not smell for a couple of washes but then the odour returned.

    I have checked the outlet hose (bleeched that as well) and it appears ok. The hose is routed as high as it can get under the worksurface so I don’t think it is syphoning back from the sink.

    I am using Finish powerball classic tablets, and have been for some time.

    I have had the machine for 13 years and this problem has only appeared in the last year. The only thing that has changed in that time is the water (it uses a hot feed) now comes from a condensing combi boiler instead of a hot water cylinder.

    Any advice would be appreciated as I don’t want to change the dishwasher because it’s been so reliable but having to hand wash the dishes once they come out of the dishwasher is defeating the point of owning one.

    Any advice would be great

    Re: Dishwasher smell

    We have the same smell on a dishwasher around 7 years old and we put 2 caps full of miltons sterilzing fluid into the sump last thing at night if the smell is there… This lasts for some time before it needs doing again. 😀

    Re: Dishwasher smell

    I wonder if your troubles are being caused by greasy residues in the drain pipes within the machine.

    Try using a dishwasher cleaner. They come in various forms, such as Finish Dishwasher Cleaner;
    Sainsbury’s Dishwasher Cleaner Tablets;
    or other supermarkets’ own versions.

    They have to be used on a programme that is between 60-70 degrees Celsius. They are designed to shift any grease, and also combat any limescale that may have settled in the dishwasher. You may have to repeat this every few months.

    I too have noticed a smell coming from dishes. It seems to come from certain detergents and /or rinse-aids, probably in combination with food-soils and grease.

    Through trial and error, I’ve found that Finish or Fairy detergent; and Finish rinse-aid, seem to offer the best cleaning and are less likely to taint crockery.

    The liquid-gel detergents on sale in the shops still employ the chlorine-based bleaching agents, which perform better on tea stains.

    The old chlorine based powders are also still available, but only through certain shops (farmer’s supply shops, Cash’n’Carry, etc.). This style of detergent is now classed as “Professional”, and sold under familiar names: “SUN”, “FINISH”, “BRYTA”.

    Thanks for the reply’s,

    Forgot to mention in my post that I’ve already tried dishwasher cleaners with little success.

    Put some Milton fluid in it the other night and 3 days later there is still no smell !!! If the smell comes back (even with the milton) I will try a different brand of dishwasher tablet.

    Do you use rinse-aid?

    I wonder if you have an excess of hydrogen sulphide gas dissolved in your water supply. Have you noticed a similar smell when boiling a kettle, or running a bath?

    The combi-boiler could be contributing to a concentration in the dishwasher, whereas the old copper cylinder would have allowed the vapours to vent out into the atmosphere, before getting anywhere near the machine. Sadly, a cold feed to the machine might have the same result as the combi-boiler… 🙁

    Re: Dishwasher smell

    I’ve not used rinse aid since I started using tablets (a number of years ago) as oposed to loose powder. It may be worth trying though as the plates (particularly plastic ones that my young son uses) are sometimes not dry when removed in the morning.

    There has been no smell from hot water from the tap or when boiling a kettle.

    The dishes are still smell free 4 days later so the milton is still doing the trick.
