Can somebody confirm that error code nine on an Indesit W123 is a controller fault?
Switching on machine causes the light to flash slowly a few times, then quickly a few times. There is then a pause before the dial starts rotating. During the rotation, the dial flashes nine times, pauses, then repeats.
Searching on the forum didn’t come up with error code nine but I did find a link to the WD12 and W103 which suggest it is a control board fault if the codes are the same.
Looking at the control board, it was covered in dust (from the brushes??) but no other visible faults and cleaning it up hasn’t helped.
This fault has occurred a few times in the past and it has cleared itself by being left for a day or so. This time this hasn’t worked.

The EEPROM on the control board has gone batty, Battie.
Full model number and serial number required to identify suitable replacement.

Cool, I was thinking this was a bin job but I’m an Elec Eng by trade so buying, programming, fitting Eeproms is something I can do easily. The only issue is the code within the Eeprom, I guess you don’t have a copy to hand?!?

Eeprom part number is C00094742, comes pre programmed. An e-mail to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk should do the trick.
Codes for these eeproms are closely guarded by the Indesit Company and only their engineers have the software on their laptops to programme blank eeproms.

New EEPROM has turned up – Thank you UK Whitegoods. Good service.
EEPROM is a 16kb 93C86 (Cost of blank part from Farnell £1.20 – Cost of part with code in it £25. – Its a pity that Indesit make you pay an extra for the code considering that I have bought the code already once when I got the machine in the first place. )
Removed old part from board and discover that it had almost been wiped clean (contents was #FFFE, a full wipe would be #FFFF). Nothing wrong with the device though and was able to put the new code back into the old part without a problem. Makes me wonder what caused the device to be wiped in the first place? Have Indesits got a built in self destruct?
I’ll put the control board back in the machine this evening and hopefully that will get it back operational again.

Ok, I’m back home and have plugged the control board back in together with the new EEPROM and…..
… it now flashes error code three when the dial rotates.Can you tell me what that is please. (Can’t find anybody else with this problem during a search)

NTC open or short circuit. The heater temperature sensing device (NTC) is the small ‘probe’ that is pushed through the heater mounting plate. Could be bad connections between board and NTC.
The connectors on these boards are rather weak. 😥

Well the NTC sensor has a resistance of 35K (at room temperature) and the connection on the control board has a resistance of 14K. When connected together the combined resistance drops to 10K so I am confident that the connections are OK.
This leaves either the NTC being faulty or the control board has gone phut. Thermistors come in all sorts of values so I have no idea if 35K is about right, can somebody let me know this?
My feeling is that the thermistor is fine and a new control board is needed which would basically mean a new machine (a Bosch this time I think….).
(NTC = negative temperature coefficient if you are wondering like I was)

35K @ room temperature is about right. Problem will be your Module I guess? 🙁

OK. New machine it is.
It would have been nice to have fixed it but it is just not worth taking it any further with this machine.

The rotating dial is a fault message, the washer is trying to tell you it has a problem. The actual fault is revealed by the number of flashes of the red LED. For example, 10 flashes means a problem with the pressure switch, 3 flashes means a faulty module.
To reset the module, switch OFF at the mains, turn the dial to the next black dot, switch ON at the mains.
I got a second-hand module for £20 from a back-street shop. It worked fine. Think re-use, re-cycle, save the Planet (and your cash)

Or buy a far better quality machine in the first place that will last ten to 15 years and be economically repairable during that time. If you spend £350 to £400 and it lasts that length of time it is at least three times more likely to ‘Save the Planet’ than buying cheap , throw away goods. 👿
