ParticipantUpdated…
Damn, spoke too soon! the brushes did need changing but the original fault is still there. I’m stumped…
Motor runs OK and spin program works OK.
Machine fills OK and empties OK.
The heater is working OK.So what does the flashing superwash lamp indicate? only thing left I
can think of is perhaps the thermistor temperature sensor but that
seems to be working (put a meter on it and it changes with temperature – about 33Kohms).Can anyone help?
Original post…
Have been trying to fix our washing machine (H160E) which has been playing up and now stops before the end of its program with the Superwash and Start lamps flashing 3 times on then pause (pattern repeated). After much searching I was unable to find any information on the meaning of this display but after resorting to traditional faultfinding logic have tracked this down to indicating that the brushes need replacing.
Fitted new brushes (£20) and we’re back in business.
Incidentally while diagnosing this I found the soap/softner dispenser very clogged and gave it a good clean-up – it gets right down underneath the tray so you need to take it out to do it properly. I think this model seems rather suceptible to this problem.
Just posting this info in the hope that it may help someone else – really annoys me that it is so difficult to find information on the meaning of error displays.

well, u need to count how many times the superlight flashes
its usually the yellow thermistor wire not connected properly on its terminal, wiggle the wire, itll usually come off easily if thats the case
if it aint that count the number of flashes, and we’ll look it up for u
incidentally, the thermistor fault is 6 flasheshth

helo, thanks for the info – the flash sequence seems to be 3 flashes followed by a pause (5 or 6 seconds) then it repeats.
I have checked the yellow wires on the thermistor, they seem fine.
I even put a meter on the other end of them on the plug to the control
module – measures about 30k (cold) resistance drops as the thremistor
is warmed so I think this must be OK.I guess this leaves the control module itself. At about £60 I’m torn between replacing it on spec or calling out Hoover (machine has abour 6 months parts warranty still to go) but I expect that to be at least £90 callout. Hmm decisions decisions.
Thanks again anyway. If you can pin down the meaning of the 3 flashes I’d be interested anyway – just hate being beaten by an inanimate lump like these!

Curious – 3 flashes indicates no drain detected after 6 minutes of pumping. Usually filter or sink coupling, but can be problems with the water level control system. It can itself become blocked and not sense properly or the pressure switch itself can fail.
Power off as you investigate.

Penguin45,
interesting – certainly when it stops there is still water in the drum so that fits the scenario. But if I turn off and select “drain” program
it seems to empty OK.Sounds like I need to re-check the drain side of things – I did remove some junk from the filter but maybe there is still some partial blockage
slowing the drain time. You’ve certainly given me something to double
check before I resort to calling in “the man”.Thanks – I’ll post an update once I’ve found some time to have another go
at it.Vic

Penguin45, thanks – looks like you were right on target.
Took another look today and ascertained that there were no blockages.
However when I removed the pump and hooked it up to test it at first it seemed to work OK but after several attempts I noticed that sometimes it would not start properly and just oscillated back and forth. Then I realised that if it stopped in one place it would run OK but in another not –
definately dodgy.Got a replacement and compared the winding resistance: Good one 210 ohms duff one 108 ohms… closer inspection looks like one othe the two windings may be short circuit.
I suspect it may have become damaged due to extended running whilst jammed by the junk I removed from the filter and housing.
Anyway thanks for the assistance – now just need to make some inroads into the backlog of washing piled up!
