Had to attend ISE machine today where customer reported a smell of burning rubber when she opened the door after spin had finished.
Removed door seal and there is a groove melted into the seal on about 2/3 of the diameter.
Fitted new door seal & hopefully that will be the end of it but past experience with lower spec machines makes me think that there may be a problem with the drum going out of shape under load conditions or the bearing housing not being accurateley moulded into the tub.
Anyone come accross this problem with ISE?

    Re: Burning smell

I would suggest sending the displaced seal back for examination, could it be caused by an article of clothing rather than the drum?

Not had a single reported case bar yours Steve, even on machines that have been out for a while. Perhaps a fluke or, as Jim says, something in there.

    Re: Burning smell

New door seal has not cured the problem.
Nothing gone under the drum, the rim has only picked up rubber on half of its circumference and the seal has a groove on about 2/3 of its face which suggests to me a weakness or dimension fault in the drum or the tub moulding.
BTW she did notice the problem earlier but says it has got worse.
Anyway the customer is not happy about having the tub out of her six week old washing machine especially after having been sold it on the quality and reliability ticket.
I have no worries about changing the tub/drum but it wont do much for customer relations 🙁

No Steve, we ain’t doing that, we’ll swap the machine and test it later.

Can you give David a ring in the morning and organise it please, I’ll fill him in when I see him.

    Re: Burning smell

    hi steve,

I have come into this late, but as ever myself and Ken are on the same wave length.

I have responded to Mr Lindly who e-mailed us (I have copied you in on my reply) saying we will swap it out and test the other one to understand what is wrong.

As Ken said we have had nothing like this before, so we need get to the bottom of it.

The only faults we have had out of getting close to a 1000 machines is a handlful of boards and a couple of machines that were constantly filling on installation that Sean is currently testing in Anglesey. As we did with the 3 customers who did not understand how the out of balance work we play with the machine until we get to the bottom of it and as with that we will publish the results in a Tech bulletin.

I hope the exchange sorts out Mr & Mrs Lindly. We will post what the problem was in line with our policy on openness.

    Regards

    John

    Re: Burning smell

We swapped over a machine for ISE with the same fault described above with over filling. It also would not go onto test mode and would not start on select programmes. When it did start after pushing in the selector dial quite hard, the machine just overfilled.
Took the module out, away from the fasia and found selector not assembled properly and knob spindle not clipped in properly.
re-built selector and clipped in spindle, put back together and working on a test bay for two weeks with no problems at all.

    Hi Andy,

That’s interesting, did not know that had the ‘burning smell’. I’ll ask Sean to check it out when we get it back.

    Cheers

    Re: Burning smell

I have had about three machines burning grooves in the door boot. In the past I have had to change the tub, but on my last one I tried a different approach. Plenty of rubber on the boot so I removed the boot, put a grinding wheel on a power drill and ground a deeper groove for the drum to sit in. No call back yet.
    Regards,
    Mike.
