    Hi

I have a problem with my SMEG suk 80 mfx. The original symptom was a completely burned out computator which happened when the grill was on.

I replaced the computator and the grill and oven worked ok. However after using the grill just twice the compuator has started to fry again.

The oven, fans and everything seem to work ok but the grill now only goes luke warm (I guess this is because the grill part of the compuator is on its way out again.)

For safety I’ve now isolated the electrical supply and am totally reliant on the hob and microwave.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this. The applience is 9 years old. I guess I’m facing a repair or dump decison if this is not a DIY job.

    All advice is welcomed.

    Cheers.

First of all you need to ascertain if the commutator (selector switch) is on the way out again….a visual inspection will usually suffice. If it is then the most common cause of failure of these is not the switch itself, it’s usually a poor connection onto it which heats up and damages the plastic body of the switch.
Cure….new switch and replace the connectors on the wires.

If the switch appears ok then its meter time to check for resistance in the grill supply, and correct operation of the oven stat (used as a safety cut-out during grill operation)

If all thats beyond you then its engineer time, but if you’re having a go yourself then you must isolate the appliance before doing anything :zap:

    Cheers Clive

The connectors are sound so it’s probably not that.

I think its probably get an engineer in time. Now I need to find a good independent in Northampton.

    Cheers

    Clive (my name too!)
