ParticipantHi, I’m looking for assistance re this 6 year old machine. It functions normally on all wash cycles & spins ok but has started to occasionally stall on a full load wash cycle at start up.
About two or three times a month it will try to start up after the normal water fill but the drum will not rotate more than say 10 degrees of arc as if overloaded. At this point there is a significant hum & judder as the drum struggles to move. To prevent motor damage the machine is switched off imediatley. Removing some of the load then allows it to operate normally.
So far I can confirm the belt is not slipping, I have previously changed the drum bearings (because of noise on spin). I have tested the start capacitor value (C=T/R) which is ok on low voltage test. The motor is Type 20572702 (Induction?) with a tacho generator and I wonder if the DMPA 10 module is developing a fault causing false triggering of the motor power feed.
Before I shell out for a new module, it would be great to know the fault is in there. Has anybody got a module circuit ? or knows where to get one ?
Thanks in advance for any inputs……..Max :conf:February 13, 2007 at 7:04 pm #204265Washman

Hi
Model number and serial number required, both should be on inside of filter flap.

An induction motor uses a capacitor to “boost” the motor on start up. The drum rocking and not turning is indicative of a capacitor failure.
A selection of capacitors may be found here:

Match the “uF” rating and Bob will, indeed, be you uncle. If it it’s not listed there, contact spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk directly and they’ll supply it promptly for you.Power off, of course.

Thanks for the feedback.
The start capacitor was my first port of call so I have checked the value of this by charging it via a 0.5 Mohm resistor to 63{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the final charging voltage. This checks OK (10secs or there about) out for a 20uf capacitor, albeit at a low voltage. I’ll change the capacitor anyway at the ealiest opportunity. The other thing is this is intermittent as most of the time the motor starts normally on its usual wash load. I suppose there could also be a duff stator winding in the motor or a loose contact somewhere ?

Hi maxere,
Sorry to hijack your post, but you say you changed the drum bearings on your Caress 1100. We also have a Caress 1100 (Model M3011A s/n 20002708923) and the drum bearings have disintegrated from the sound and feel of it 🙁 Don’t know how closely related the models are, but how much of a pain was changing the bearing? and how much should I expect to pay for the new parts?
Thanks

You’ll need a set of these:
http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.p … ucts_id=69Back of the drum’s got to come out, then you need a large hammer and drift. Patience job more than anything. Oh, and make diagrams of where all the wires went.

Hi Graeme,
As I remember the bearing change was straightforward : Unplug supply etc, remove back panel, roll off belt, release seal clamp from outer drum back plate, jiggle the drum & back plate out of machine, knock out drum & shaft from spider using block of wood & lump hammer (to protect threads replace nut flush to shaft end), knock out old bearings evenly using a drift.
New bearings should be pressed in but a rounded shaft can be used to bash them in evenly with reasonable care on the outer race, don’t let the bearing cant on pushing back in.
The ones I replaced didn’t appear to worn but made a racket on spin which returned to ‘as new’ when replaced.
Hope this helpsRef the Stall on starting
I have ordered the new start capacitor but don’t hold much hope that this will fix the starting problem as it operates normally on half load. Investigating the DMPA H7 control module I have found that the motor circuit uses a Triac as a soft power start to feed the field winding supply via the motor reversing relay. Next time I get the urge I will measure the Triac ‘on’ voltage when under stalled condition to see if full power is being delivered to the motor.maxere

Just an update.
I Have now changed the motor capacitor and so far there has been no stalls under fairly full loads. I have re seated the motor control Triac with generous thermal compound to ensure proper heat dissipation on the DMPA H7 module.
If the capacitor was the culprit then it must have had problems under full drive, so I guess thats true ‘Bobs is my uncle’.
A Good call by Penguin 45.
Many thanks to all. 😀
