    Hello, wonder if anyone can help. My frost free fridge/freezer purchased May 2003 started making rattling noises a few weeks ago. The noises have now stopped but the fridge doesn’t seem to be working. The only noise coming from the unit is a humming sound and the odd quiet click click.

    I’ve vacumned the back and no difference.
    I’ve raised the temperature guage to 4. No difference.
    Switched it off for 30 mins and when switched back on just started humming again.

    The black box at the bottom of the rear (compressor?) is quite hot.

    Is there anything else I can check and do I need to unscrew anything to get check them.

    I am a dummy when it comes to dismantling stuff but a quick learner so willing to have a go! 😕

    I had to repair one of these last week.

    It is better to switch the appliance off for 24hours and then switch it back on.Sometimes the fan gets stuck from ice and will make rattling noise.If that does not work properly, yor fridge part will not cool.

    If you do that then let us know what happens?

    Hi,
    Thankyou so much for your response and the article which I read with interest. I haven’t been able to switch off for 24 hours as I need to find a home for my freezer contents. However, did switch off overnight for 8 hours. Still the same symptons when switched back on although the fridge does feel slightly cooler than when it was switched off … but still not cool enough, milk going off etc.

    Will let you know when I get the opportunity to switch the freezer off for 24 hours.

    Hello again. I switched the fridge/freezer off for 24 hours but no difference. Freezer fine again but fridge still warm. Any advice on what it can be and if an amatuer such as me can replace it. If not what might the cost be and is it worth it for a four year old appliance.

    This appliance is fitted with a defrost timer and if that or heater goes faulty unit builds up with ice, defrosting for 24 hours would probably not get to the ice in the vent tube to the fridge.

    You would have to leave doors open for 48 hours, but if timer etc faulty would be the same in a few days. Sorry time for an engineer.
