I’m the guy with the topic about the Whirlpool/Ikea problem – topic is viewtopic.php?f=33&t=22330

…I have now detached the side panel of the dishwasher to have a look at the internals, and I noticed something that I just don’t understand. Figuring a picture to be worth a thousand words, I took some:

Now, what exactly is this I am seeing? It looks like (as far as I can tell) solidified gravy or something like that. Is this normal? If not, what can I do about it? Is it likely to be the cause of my problems?

I’m wondering how easy it would be to remove this (is it a sump of some sort?) and clear it, but I have no real experience of fixing dishwashers and am trying to be careful.

    Can anyone advise?

    Thanks,

    John

    Hi John,

It’s the water softening unit you’re seeing there and that’s the resin container, a fuller explanation of how it works is available from this link

OK, thanks. Doesn’t look pretty, though, eh?

We live in a soft-water area (Fife, in central Scotland) and I don’t think we’ve ever added salt – could this be connected to our problem with the machine not draining?

    I’m running out of ideas…

It is extremely unlikely that the softener unit has anything to do with a drain problem, different water circuit totally.
