Our Proline Freezer, purchased from Comet in August 1991 and working happily since then in our integral garage, has developed a temperature problem.

In the January storm when we were out there was a 1/2 hour power cut (possibly preceded by flickering as encountered where we were). Later I realised the alarm was lit. It didn’t clear so I switched off for 20 mins as suggested in the handbook, restarted with fast freeze and it eventually cleared after about 24 hours.

The problem has returned, the alarm is lit in spite of fast freeze for 24 hours, the temperature is -12degC at the top and -14degC at the bottom, instead of the “Normal” temp of -18deg. The compressor runs continually, the alarm light goes out if the thermostat is adjusted half way between Min and Normal. I have defrosted it. Any ideas?

I know Proline is merely a Comet brand, but it is a Model C140/Z, barcodes on the back have the numbers 396007239011500 and 1251678. The compressor has ZEM CLB R12 E 80 101 A 2518251. The circuit diagram is no. 95 61541.

I would quite like to repair it (have it repaired) if is is feasible as it would be an upheaval to change it in the garage (which contains everything but a car!).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like you’ve lost gas…… Tricky call really – no point in recharging it if the leak cannot be found and sealed.

TBH 16 years is a good run, and you do need to sort out the garage anyway, don’t you? 😀

Re: Proline Chest Freeezer Temperature Problem

Thanks – there is a point in the copper piping near the compressor which reminds me of leaks occurring in water pipes, i.e. an excrescence and verdigris, and which might be a gas leak. I can’t smell anything, should I? It could be easy to repair (by someone who knows) but is R12 still legal?

If we get an expert who condemns it, are there any suggestions for a 360cu.ft. (net) chest freezer that will be happy in a cool garage and will last another 16 years! (or at least what to avoid).

    Hi

At 360 cu ft must be nearly as big as you garage.

Sorry – for cu.ft. read litres – can’t get the hang of this metric stuff!

Re: Proline Chest Freeezer Temperature Problem

Researching a replacement (although I haven’t given up on repair/recharging yet) I have been looking at the Bosch GTA 37902, which is so similar in design (apart from much thicker insulation) and the baskets are identical, that my Proline may well be a Bosch (?).

I have been reading all the threads here relating to garage/shed placement, but cannot find a reference on the Bosch site to the ambient requirement of this freezer.

Given that the existing one has lasted 16 years sitting on a pallet in my attached garage, which does get down to 5degC at times, can I expect a similar performance from the new model, or is whatever modern refrigerant is used now (I assume R12 is superseded) a factor?
