Like a previous writer Im wondering if he found the problem with his dishwasher. Out of the blue I found that it sounded as though it was doing a fill, and then about 4 hours later I realised the dishwater was still going, not water sloshing around like the previous persons, and no water in the bottom just a splashing over the dishes. Pulled it out, put it on a drain and it seemed to drain some water. Put everything back and started the process again, sound to have water going in but same problem. Have checked the spinners, no clogging there. Even rolled it slightly on its back as a previous engineer 5 years ago told me to do, just had water on the floor. If there is any clogging of food apart from the spinners where else could I look to double check. No burning smells or anything out of the ordinary apart from the dial (just remembered) doesnt seem to be moving or its just that slow im assuming that. Any other advice would be so gratefully received. cheers moira

If you got water from the base when you tipped the machine, it’s not a good sign – there is a leak somewhere. If the machine is actually filling, the water should cover the base if the machine, but be below the heating element. If this is actually the case, I would suspect that the circulation motor has failed in some way. Given the age of the machine, this may not be a cost effective repair. Have a look and post back.

Hi penguin, thanks for your reply. Well I bit the bullet and called in our famous chinese man in the area, a wonder at fixing all sorts and very reasonable. He’s just arrived and left and its working. He took the bottom spinner off, took out the plug that held it and said ‘be back in a minute’, came back with some silicon glue put it on the plug somewhere couldnt quite see, put it back, spinner back on, and ‘voila’, water came slushing in and made all the right noises. Yes it cost £25.00 for 2 mins but he is a known genius, and I thought the £25.00 (albeit I can ill afford) was worth knowing what to do if it should happen again. A common problem I believe the bottom plug works loose over years and it leaks water, therefore it wasnt filling the machine to activate the floater cut off switch, this is how I understood it from a chinese speaking man. Anyway a tip maybe for others and thanks again for responding.

Sounds as though he might have just blocked off the overflow vent. 😯
The fill level is controlled by a pressure switch via a small air pipe. The float switch is in the base and only operates when water leaks into the base.

If you use 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 tablets and rinse aid this often leads to overfoaming which then leaks into the base via the overflow vent. It is better to use separate powder, salt & rinse aid, Fairy Active Bursts are also quite good.

If he has blocked off the overflow vent and you do use 4 in 1 tablets then the machine may eventually leak onto the floor.

thanks iadom for replying, silicone wrapped around the base of the plug would that block off the overflow? I understood it stopped the water seeping away into the lower section through the plug. Thanks for the other tip, even tho I never use 3 in 1 as I was told they were a waste of money anyway.
what a great site and thanks for the wonderful advice,

If the ‘plug’ you are referring to is a small thing that sticks up from the base of the tub, behind the spray arm, that is the overflow vent. It is a common cause of leakage into the base but it is only supposed to allow water into the base if the water level in the tub becomes to high. I think it has been removed from recent production though.

Sealed or not, the overflow vent does not control the fill in any way. 😉
