Branded Coop but label says Thorn 38780/1 and it must be at least 25 years old. Has the time come for it to go to the fridge mountain.
The freezer compressor a TL5A – 102U – comes on for a few seconds then cuts out. Maybe 5 minutes later it will repeat. It seems to be getting very hot for something that isn’t running. I have replaced the relay. The rapid freeze (thermostat override?) switch lights up but doesn’t switch the compressor on.
I’ll be sad to see it go but if it is the compressor I suspect it’s not worth the cost of the repair or a call out charge to get it confirmed. On the other hand one repair and it might last another 25 years.
I’m resigned to getting a new one but would hate to see it go if the problem wasn’t serious.

    Hi

It sounds as if the compressor has seized IMO.
Due to its age, the refrigerant will be the old obsolete R12, which is ozone unfriendly.
You can replace compressor and use one of the newer refrigerents, but spending approx £200 on an appliance that old would be silly 😉

    Thanks Greg,
R12 it is – it’s on the label.
It’s a sad day, that fridge freezer has been with me through thick and thin and apart from a relay 9 years ago has been totally reliable. The quality of the plastics is superb, no flexing under the weight of a milk carton there. It originally cost about £230 25 years ago and what will a new one cost – not much more. Bet the new one won’t last quite so long though.
    Thanks again for the advice.
